Anti-virus/spyware/malware is pretty much a windows requirement. Viruses and spyware are rarely, if ever, found on a Mac or Linux based desktop and not just because windows is more popular.

ClamAV is the only free Mac AV software that I am aware of.

The following articles go into more detail on the subject and provide info on the available AV products for MACs.

The knowledgeable people will tell you that you cannot get a virus on a Mac running MacOs X because it is true. There are no released MacOs X viruses. You can't catch something which isn't out there. The last Mac virus was 3 years ago and 49 Macs got it before it died out. You cannot get any malware/adware/spyware on a Mac by just visiting a website or opening any email. You have to be duped into downloading the "evil" software, then agree to install it and put in your admin password twice. There's just 4 Mac trojans, fake free anti-virus, fake free adware blocker, fake poker game, and a fake codec to view porn. As to phishing, if you get an email telling you you won a lottery in Nigeria which you never entered, then ignore it. The upgraded versions of Safari & Firefox will notify you if you go to fake websites for your bank etc. If you still want something legit and free, try ClamXav, do a Google for it. I did tech support for 10 years, never had a Mac running MacOs X with a virus/adware/malware or trojan.
