Question:
Can't access anything at all?? Virus help?
2011-07-20 10:29:29 UTC
Ok, my computer got a virus that has doesn't let me access a single thing on my desktop, and whenever I try to change a certain setting in my control panel (such as my accessibility options) it shows this message:
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

The only way I managed to get on the internet was by clicking on my little sister's free realms icon on the desktop and it automatically took me to the internet.
How can I remove this virus? Or is it even possible?

When you reboot the computer, hold down the [F8] key and then boot into "Safe Mode With Networking". Then in your browser, Download and install SuperAntiSpyware and then use it to scan your PC. (A "quick scan" should be enough to remove the virus.)

if you need more help, feel welcome to e-mail me

EDIT: OK, I have an idea. When you boot-into-Safe-Mode With Networking, log on using "Administrator". If you are not the Administrator, try logging on as Administrator anyways. If it prompts you for a password, ask your Administrator for the password. Then, after you log on as "Adminstrator", still in Safe Mode, download SuperAntiSpyware. If it says "access is denied" then download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. You can download it from http://download.cnet.com/

Actually, once you have a virus, even if you believe it is only affecting your account, the virus has the potential of being on every account (many forms of malware are located in the directory of X:\Windows (where X is the letter of the storage unit Windows is installed on) to hide their parent files, because most users do not look in their system files, and that directory is native to every account on your computer, so the virus could directly access any account it wanted to). Below is a way to be safe:

The following directions are to be performed from when your computer is off.

1. Press the power button on your computer.

2. Immediately after the computer is on, repeatedly press F12, until you are in the Boot Menu.

2a. If the computer boots as normal, turn off the computer, and repeat steps 1-2, replacing the action of pressing F12 with pressing another F-key. You can also attempt using ESC.

3. Either way, you should be in the Boot Menu. Press the button next to your primary CD-ROM.

4. Place an operating system installation disk on the CD-ROM tray.

5. Press the button next to your primary CD-ROM.

6. Use the arrow keys to select the option for booting from your CD-ROM.

7. Press Enter.

8. Press a key.

9. Follow the directions to install the operating system.
