pc keeps getting advertisements popping up?

can anyone help,my pc keeps getting adverts popping up and i am not sure how to stop them,i am not good at all with the pc i can just about basically use it and dont really understand all the jargon,so if anyone can help me (in plain speaking)i would be very grateful,i have managed to enable the pop up blocker which hasent helped,the problem is there are sometimes adult dating agencys etc keep popping up and my granchildren use the computor,so its not very nice
