It's running slow, I keep getting advertisements popping up when I'm trying to read my mail or do other things. I have McAfee Security so if this is a virus how do I get rid of it?

It sounds like spyware. Spyware will slow down your PC and Mcafee isnt any good for picking up spyware. Scan your PC with these to remove it. Both are free and safe to use.

Install and update.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

I have McAfee Security. Sometimes I seem slow when I first connect to the internet but that's because McAfee is scanning things or downloading updates. I don't believe its a virus, worm or other. McAfee would let you know. You didn't mention what email program you are using. Free email services often times put ads out while reading them. That's how they make the service free.

Another suggestion would be: download for free and use for free while getting updates for free is Spybot Search and Destroy. An internet search will get you there. I use it and it finds "adware, cookies," and other unwanted things hanging around. It will also clean them away. I make sure I do the updates through the Spybot first and then have it scan things. I do this @ 2 times per week.
