Question:
win spy away spyware on my computer?
2008-03-03 12:45:33 UTC
so, yea I've got this spyware on my computer. It keeps giving me these pointless advertisements about installing a new anti-spyware. Of course, I didn't do that. I ran a full system scan with my Norton Anti-Virus(latest one) and it didn't seem to erase it. What else could I do? Someone suggested running Norton Anti-Virus in safe mode...Will that work?

*I don't want any more anti-virus downloads, I'm happy with Norton.

By running your antivirus program will not get rid of spyware, you need to get a good and reliably Spyware program installed and set to scan. Keep Nortons as I have it to and without any problems so far, Nortons is a virus protections program. Here is a link where you can download this spyware program , I like it and others here recomend it also. (http://www.superantispyware.com) Get it and run it right away. Good Luck OH! Don't download any other programs that keep popping up as most are spyware and adware themselves, the one that I gave you is well known and used by others here, stick with a program that others used, test it out , and recomend, then you will be alright. And you don't have to do this in the safty mode either, just download and run. Good Luck.

Make sure that your Norton is up to date, then install ThreatFire.

You should also visit the Google Pack website in order to download Spyware Doctor for free.

I would also recommend that you use Mozilla's Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Once it's installed, you should also install the Adblock Plus add-on. After it's been installed, it will ask you if you want to add certain premade lists. I find that instead of adding one, it's best to visit the homepage of EasyList, and add all three lists from there, instead of just one from the original menu.

If you don't already have a firewall, I would strongly recommend that you download Comodo. It can be a bit annoying to "train" it, so when it asks you questions, answer truthfully and thoughtfully.

These programs should get you well on your way, and might even possibly fix the problem on their own. If they don't, or if you're interested on how to protect your computer further, feel free to check out my step by step guide on malware removal. It includes the programs I just mentioned, a few more, and their optimal settings. You can find it here: http://prometechus.blogspot.com/2007/09/viruses-spyware.html

Best of luck, hope this helps. Also, don't forget to check if anyone has asked a similar question before asking one yourself.

What you can do is reboot your computer, and then go into safe mode, choose the one with safe networking, download A-Squared 3 from the net (www.emsisoft.com), this is free and run this program. Lots of people will recommend Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware 2007 to do this, however they are not as good as they used to be, they lost grounds to some of the newer free anti-spyware programs in recent years. A-Squared is better in my view.

EDIT: As Churchill advert, the dog would say "oh yes!". Always do the removal of spyware from your PC in safe mode, because the chances are; it will come back again if you do it in normal Windows.

spy away is not virus, it's different type of computer parasites, so i'm not sure if running antivirus in safe mode will help you. if you have anti spyware on your computer, run it and delete everything it finds. if you don't use anti spyware and you don't wanna download anything, i suggest you use manual spy away removal: http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-spyaway.html
