It sounds like you have a registry virus. You can try reinstalling MSN but there is a very good chance nothing will change and more aggressive steps will be necessary.

Here are a few options you can try

1, Update norton and try scanning again, try anotherr antivirus program. You can also try mounting your hard drive as a slave and scanning it with another program.

2. Back up everything and format. Make two partitions one just for Windows to run on, the second partition to keep your important files

3. Download and burn the iso files for Linux Ubuntu on a dvd, restart run it as LiveCD and use the built in tools to partition, backup your information etc. Format reinstall windows.

4. Say bye bye to windows, go to Linux Ubuntu and never worry about another virus. Dual boot with Windows, and only use windows in the rare case where you encounter a program that windows cant run.

If you chose to go the Ubuntu route, there are several messenger options for you Ubuntu comes with pidgin messenger built in, kopete is another awesome messenger you can install with 1 command

"sudo apt-get install kopete" or you can get aMSN which does every single thing regular MSN does but it looks significantly better.

5. If you want to stick to windows, and dont want to do any of the dirty work Take it to a professional.

You could open up the 'My Computer' in your start and right click on "Local Disk (C:)" then click on 'Properties' and that will pull up a box with 5 tabs. On the 'General' tab, click 'Disk Cleanup.' Click on the 'Tools' tab and that will change the box. Click on both boxes. The first one is 'Error-checking' check now. When you click on that, another box will come up and make sure you put a check in both boxes which will fix the errors and it will fix and recover the bad 'sectors' which are the divisions of memory then click on the Start. Then another box will come up to tell you that it cannot check because it to have the whole computer still and it will ask you if you want to start the check when you re-start. Click 'yes.' It will disappear leaving the 5-tab box. Click on 'Defragment now. . .' and that will pull up another box that has alot of stuff on there, but click on 'Defragment.' And sit back and wait; it will take awhile for it to Defrag the disk.

All this time it has been working on 'Disk Cleanup.' When it finishes cleaning the disk, a box will come up telling you everything that is cleanable on you disk. This is where you have to be careful in what you do. On the 'Disk Cleanup' tab, check the boxes for 'Temporary Internet Files,' 'Recycle Bin,' 'Temporary Files,' and 'Compress Old Files.' Click 'OK' and a box will come up asking you if you want to do it; click 'Yes.'

This will take awhile, but you are not finished. After all this is done and you finish with your computer for the day or whatever, you can turn it off. When you turn it back on, it will automatically go through 5 steps of the 'Error Checking.' It will take some time, not real long, but time for you to do something else around the house. When it finishes, you should have a brand new system.

There is also a thing called 'System Restore' which will restore everything in your computer that is supposed to be there. The thing about System Restore' is it will take your your computer back before certain updates that the Security System has installed and you will have to update again. MSN, Yahoo, and every other internet provider has security and your computer has a firewall. Every day you have checks and updates for the security.

You can run antivirus and antispyware programs, but the sad fact is if you have found one virus on your computer, you probably have several. Cleaning the computer now requires you to follow these steps, because modern viruses and spyware entrench themselves in files that your computer needs in order to run:

1. Virus-check your data files (not application files-- you have installer CDs for those).

2. Back up the data files, getting them off your hard drive.

3. Get your original operating system CDs that came with your computer.

4. Boot your computer from the operating system CD.

5. Select the option that erases your hard drive and then reinstall your system software.

6. Turn on your software firewall that came with your operating system.

7. Reconnect to the internet, and download *all* Windows updates, no matter how long it takes.

8. Reinstall your application software, and update the applications as much as you can.

9. Reinstall your data files.

10. Create a limited user account on your system that does *not* have administrator access, and web surf only from this account.

Yes, this is a pain in the butt. No, there is no other way. No, antivirus and antispyware programs cannot fix this problem on its own.

So, what do you do in the future?

1. Never click on links you find in an e-mail.

2. Never open an e-mail attachment, ever.

3. Only download files from a reputable website that you know is on the up-and-up.

4. Never use bit-torrent and other file-sharing programs.

5. Never use an unsolicited drive-checking site.

6. Turn off all java and java scripting by default, and only enable java and java scripting for sites that you know you can trust.

7. Never read an unsolicited e-mail, and delete spam immediately. It is possible to be hacked by reading an e-mail alone.

Please adhere to the 'dont's' I provided above, because you will have to repeat the cleaning steps that I listed first *every time you get infected.* Anti-spyware and anti-virus programs are good to have, but they are a second line of defense. The best way to protect your system is you, and changing your behavior.

Good luck!
