i had a virus and i thought the reason IE no longer worked is because the antivirus software i had was blocking it.

is that possible, or is it more likely i still have a virus?

how can i make IE run again (safely)
thanks

Antispyware Soft and viruses from its family usually disable the IE, so try to check your LAN settings in this way:

1. Restart your computer. As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, tap “F8” key constantly. Use the arrow keys to highlight the “Safe Mode with Networking” option as shown in the image below, and then press ENTER.

2. Open Internet Explorer. Click on the Tools menu and then select Internet Options.

3. In the the Internet Options window click on the Connections tab. Then click on the LAN settings button.

4. Now you will see Local Area Network (LAN) settings window. UNCHECK the checkbox labeled "Use a proxy server for your LAN" under the Proxy Server section and press OK.

IE is VERY virus sensitive! It was never safe (and very slow). Don't use it ever again download safer browsers like Firefox or Google Chrome. After you download either of those, download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, restart your computer into Safe Mode and do a Full Scan with Malwarebytes to remove the virus you might still have.

scan your computer with malawarebytes antimalaware ( free) can be found on www.download.com - update it before you do the scan.

and secondly. DONT use internet explorer. USE firefox www.firefox.com or google chrome.

It may very well be a virus so do teh scan with teh anti malaware software i gave you its one of teh most powerfull ones i know of. even if you have an anti virus still do a scan with malawarebytes.

and use firefox/chrome instead for your own safety. internet explorer is NOT safe and one of the worst internet browsers to trust.

do you leave your computer on all the time? if you do then shut it off, wait 5 minutes and then turn back on. i have had to do that to several computers that did that. for some reason after the unit is on for a long time it messes ie up so it doesn't work unless you reboot.
