You can run antivirus and antispyware programs, but the sad fact is if you have found one virus on your computer, you probably have several. Cleaning the computer now requires you to follow these steps, because modern viruses and spyware entrench themselves in files that your computer needs in order to run:

1. Virus-check your data files (not application files-- you have installer CDs for those).

2. Back up the data files, getting them off your hard drive.

3. Get your original operating system CDs that came with your computer.

4. Boot your computer from the operating system CD.

5. Select the option that erases your hard drive and then reinstall your system software.

6. Turn on your software firewall that came with your operating system.

7. Reconnect to the internet, and download *all* Windows updates, no matter how long it takes.

8. Reinstall your application software, and update the applications as much as you can.

9. Reinstall your data files.

10. Create a limited user account on your system that does *not* have administrator access, and web surf only from this account.

Yes, this is a pain in the butt. No, there is no other way. No, antivirus and antispyware programs cannot fix this problem on its own.

So, what do you do in the future?

1. Never click on links you find in an e-mail.

2. Never open an e-mail attachment, ever.

3. Only download files from a reputable website that you know is on the up-and-up.

4. Never use bit-torrent and other file-sharing programs.

5. Never use an unsolicited drive-checking site.

6. Turn off all java and java scripting by default, and only enable java and java scripting for sites that you know you can trust.

7. Never read an unsolicited e-mail, and delete spam immediately. It is possible to be hacked by reading an e-mail alone.

Please adhere to the 'dont's' I provided above, because you will have to repeat the cleaning steps that I listed first *every time you get infected.* Anti-spyware and anti-virus programs are good to have, but they are a second line of defense. The best way to protect your system is you, and changing your behavior.

Good luck!

If you stick with AVG, this is just one of many questions you'll be asking on here.

AVG is just a joke. I would prefer just about any Antivirus programme other than this.

Do yourself a favour and get shut of it.

If you want a free one, have a go with Avast (as good and better than most paid for AV's).

http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?tag=contentMain;contentAux

If you want an even better AV and are prepared to pay....go with Kaspersky or Nod32.

These can both be bought on EBay for a fraction of the price that you would pay in the stores.

G Data internet 2011

AND NEVER use a third party site when you can go to the makers site ---all you have to do is google it ---here is malwarebytes home page

The viruses are in archive ( zipped ) files.Probably some torrent you downloaded. This means the viruses are not active.Locate the files and delete them manually

Change the Archieve size of the Virus Vault...and if you can't....your going to have to get another AV product that will change the size...but before you do that....

Download Malwarebytes anti-malware at CNet.com downloads and do a full scan...it has a much bigger capacity...and should take care of the problem....

First, do a system restore to before the problem happened. If that does nothing, try uninstalling and re-installing AVG. In the short amount of time I'm pretty sure you won't get a virus. If it's still messing up... get a new virus program. Avast free antivirus, Avira Antivir Personal, Panda Cloud Antivirus, etc.

Hello! this same thing happened too me and eventually the failure of avg ruined and crashed my computer! i went ahead and bought a new one. depending on what your computer will allow you to do is the question. if you can do the following:

A. go too www.avast.com and dwnload home edition of avast

b. run the scan asap. this will take an hour plus, if you can do it in safe mode then go for it.

c. go too www.download.com and load the MALWAREBYTES ANTIMALWARE PROGRAM

d. run it! will take an hour plus first time around

e. after the running of malwarebytes you will be amazed at the amount of garbage that it removes,

just follow the format and click remove infected items

f. now that you have 2 different programs you now have the best combo ( free of cost) at your disposal. you should make sure you uninstall AVG and never use it again as you will figure out unfortunately that AVG simply does not remove certain viruses, why i do not know! in my situation, i had a nasty trojan zlob virus and i found out after googling the virus that AVG does not remove this virus AND IT WAS 3YRS OLD! why! but it ruined my computer and files everything! also, most people find out too late that AVG does not offer heuristic protection, root kits protection either! in other words AVG s not the best choice out there, its the most popular choice though as its free!

but the AVAST AND THE MALWAREBYTES TOOLS i showed you are hands down the best stategy for you! you should run malwarebytes daily or however you wish, avast and they are both free!

im not sure what shape your computer is in right now if it got worse etc... but the easiest thing too do would be too completely wipe out the windows program, uinstall it, then reinstall a new version and your good too go! but you will need the discs and they run 130.00 bucks.. if you keep your eyes peeled and you want too avoid all of the hassle too screw with the viruses etc.. you can go too www.craigslist.org and go too the computers section and scroll down for tech service repair etc.. you can find a million side techie virus removal guys that will if needed uninstall your windows and reinstall same. you can pay them an avg of 50 too 75 bucks too do this and take advantage of the fact that they already have the skills and the expensive removal discs et...i did the same on one of my laptops, i paid a guy 40 bucks and he wiped out the windows after my 2nd try with AVG and losing of course.... get rid of your avg and go with avast.com and and malwarebytes, the feature i like the best about avg is that if you click on something infectious like trojan virus etc the avast will stop you and a siren waring sounds off instructing you too close the window.

hell hows that for a warning system! avast has a system scanner that will display the dangerous warnings telling u not too open the pages as with other programs like AVG etc you lose as they dont instruct anythng and let you open that same page and dowload horrible viruses ruining you!

good luck

What did you expect from a free AV. People will tell you to download Avast. Well, I'm sorry, When the rubber meets the road it will do you the same way. It will let you down when you need it. But if your stuck with free and can't pay for something that really works i suggest getting your operating system reloaded then get Avira antivirus. Yes it's free but at least it does have a antispy with it that runs in real time. http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php Zone alarm firewall, http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/home.htm?lid=en-us And sandboxy When your free AV lets you down you will be glad you had this,http://www.sandboxie.com/. Sandboxy is like a virtual machine. As long as you are browsing in the sand box nothing can touch you. If anything tries to infect your machine all you have to do is dump the sand box. The virtual copy of your running system will be deleted and so will all infections. Restart the machine. It will be just like nothing ever happened. Your machine will still be clean and infection free.
