Question:
Completely INFESTED with viruses!!?
2009-09-30 14:36:36 UTC
I clicked on a link on Google, and the moment I did, I got popups from Windows PC Defender saying I've been infected with viruses, and that I couldn't close the screen or the computer would crash.

Well, I closed it with no problem, but PC Defender kept popping up with scans of ever-increasing numbers of viruses of severe/high threat levels, along with worms, trojans, spyware, you name it. It then prompted me to buy the package so that I could remove it. I tried paying for it right then and there, but my credit card was denied (lol that's a whole other matter....) not enough $$ on it. And I never even downloaded anything!!

I had Norton scan everything and it came up with only one, which was removed.

Help...I'm afraid to turn the computer back on. Is my computer dead now?

Download a decent spyware remover, such as Spyware Doctor or SUPERAntiSpyware, install, update, turn safe mode on and do a scan. These programs should find Windows PC Defender and remove it (Windows PC Defender is the only infection you have). If that doesn't work, remove it manually:

Norton probably found the only problem you really had -- and that might have been PC Defender itself. But using your credit card may have given them what they wanted anyhow. Denied or not, they now have the number, and can try using it again in a few weeks or months.

I suggest you call the credit card people and change the account number. They'll be happy to do so.

Now if you still get pop-ups from PC Defender when (not if) you turn your computer back on, try this:

Run a full scan with Norton again, this time in Safe Mode with Networking. That often prevents malware from protecting itself.

I suggest you also download Ad-Aware Free and Spybot S&D (they’re free), install them, update them and run full scans with them, again in Safe Mode With Networking.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode with Networking:

1. Log out and reboot your machine.

2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

3. Select Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.

4. Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.

5. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.

6. When you're finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Note that even if the anti-malware programs get rid of the malware, they may not be able to reverse the effects. Search the Web for possible fixes.

Good luck.

Don't buy anything from such popup, there are infections trying to steal your info. Remember not to enter any of your personal financial details or even credit card. Do this

1) boot into safe mode with networking, install this, run update and quick scan

It is a scam they might have stole your credit card.

Download malwarebytes and superantispyware then run scans with both in safe mode by tapping F8 on startup and selecting safe mode. Run a scan with all both programs and your problem should be fixed.

Superantispyware http://download.cnet.com/SuperAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html?tag=mncol

Malwarebytes http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=mncol

“Can’t install or run Malwarebytes?”

Try renaming the mbam-setup.exe if installation fails.

Try renaming the mbam.exe if the program installs but doesn’t run.

Try starting in Safe-mode with Networking if program fails to install, run, or update. (Hit F8 key repeatedly when computer is starting after a reboot.)
