Question: If ALL of my browser info is deleted (cookies, etc), how does an online advertisement still know my residential location, and how did it get it in the first place? Out of sheer curiosity I also tried opening up the same website inside Linux (with a different browser), and much to my surprise it still knew my residential information. Any ideas?

lol it has nothing to do with adware.

It simply takes your IP and traceroutes it. Where your ISP is then that's where they say you're at.

If you used a proxy, it would say you lived where the proxy is located. It's simple really.

It has nothing to do with Cookies or Adware. The only way to hide your IP address is with a high-anon proxy and disabling Java applets.

IP Addresses are meaningless though. Just because someone has your IP, it doesn't mean anything at all. It's just your finger print on the internet. It's absolutely meaningless.

Don't worry about it.

You are right. There is another form of virus called adware that mostly plays as browser's add-on and load when you launch browser.

Try this free software to check and cleanup. http:www.lavasoft.com and look for Ad-Aware SE version.

If it doesn't work, restore your WindowsXP back to a previous check point from 'Help and support'. Be sure to backup required data.

Be in mind, Internet/desktop security means

firewall+antivirus+spyware+adware'. You need to take care all those topics

Your browser reports your IP address which can be resolved to find your general geographic location very easily.
