I am getting the following error pop up when i start my computer and I can't get past it to open Mcfee. This is the error mcshell.exe bad image c:\program~1\mcafee\viruss~1\scriptsn.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator ot the software vendor for support. Someone with a similar issue suggested I create a lof file and maybe someone could find the problem. thanks for looking!

First thing you need to do is install service pack 3 from microsoft. You are wide open to attacks with service pack 1. Also run the updates at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. Check this weekly.

The mcshell.exe file is part of McAfee's On-Access Scanner service

It is a possibility what you have is a malware designed to counter or

disable your anti-malware (mcafee).

Mcafee isn't really that great of a services. Free AVG or free Avast is better. Try those for the future.

Microsoft Defender you have, it is not stellar, but can help.

Also spybot search and destroy is a noteworthy anti-spyware. It comes with tea timer, that will lock many system settings, requiring your approval before they are changed.

Hijack This can help often.

If you get avast, it has an option to do a scan on boot. That is one I would try for this particular problem. http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-... and run a boot time scan right away.

An online scanner might help:

If you don't absolutely have to use Internet Explorer, switch to opera, (my favorite), firefox, chrome or safari. Internet Explorer is more vulnerable, (in so much as it is targeted more often), than the others.

If all else fails, your looking at the scourge of solutions, reinstall windows.

McAfee might not pick up on what you need fixed. You may want to uninstall it and try one of the Anti-Virus programs listed here.

If you can't get to Windows Update on your computer, go to the link listed below for XP Service Pack 3, download it, and burn it to a CD using another computer. -- The file is the complete installer for the service pack. Then run it on your computer from the CD.

go to this page:

http://download.cnet.com/windows/security-software/?tag=bc

download and install either AVG 8.5 or AVAST, but not both together.

run a full system scan and fix errors.
