I just got my computer back from my ex and its screwed up bad! If I try go to internet explorer it takes me to an add. The only site that works is google and if I search from there it just pops up ads. All just junk mail. And if I run a virus scanner it finds 18 threats and then the whole computer shuts down and says its doing a memory dump. So how do I get rid of this bug and what is it ? Or am I SOL? (Im not good with computers so detailed answers would be great!) Or even tell me where I can take it to get it fixed,

Sounds like you have some adware on the there. If you're able to get to the internet I'd suggest downloading one of these... ...

Anti Spyware:

Ad-aware - http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

SpyBot Search & Destroy - http://spybot.safer-networking.de/

SpywareBlaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareGuard - http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

WinPatrol - http://www.winpatrol.com/

... to identify whats on there and to delete it.

When you download the software (I use Search and Destroy and AdAware), be sure to check for updates first. Then run the software two or three times. You could even run one once or twice, uninstall it and then download another and run it twice. These are good free pieces of software but they don't always "see" everything the first time.

If you think it's a virus, try one of these...

Anti-Virus:

AntiVir - http://www.free-av.com/

Avast - http://www.avast.com

AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/

BitDefender - http://www.bitdefender.com

ClamWin - http://www.clamwin.com/

All are free! If you're still having problems, feel free to email/PM me. : )

Good luck!

Lyte

P.S. I'd not suggest going to a recovery point since the malware may have been on there when the recovery point was created.

There are a couple of things you could try

First of all, open Internet Explorer, go to the tools menu, then options (If you cannot see the tools menu you're probably running the newest version of Internet Explorer, so press alt and the toolbar will appear)

Under the general tab that pops up you should see delete history delete cookies and delete temporary internet files buttons (Newest I.E its 1 button that take you to a menu where you pick which things to delete, can't remember what its titled), delete all of these things, also check where your hompage is, I think its still in the "General" tab, point it to google incase its the homepage thats causing the problem.

A 2nd thing you could do is roll back to the earliest System Restore point you have (not something i've done often enough to know how long it keeps the points)

To do the system restore (on Windows XP):

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

2. On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.

3. On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to

4. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, verify that the correct restore point is chosen, and then close any open programs.

5. Click Next if you are ready to proceed or click Back to change the restore point.

6. The computer will shut down automatically and reboot. On reboot, you'll see the Restoration Complete page, and then click OK.

Third and most drastic solution is the reinstall the operating system.

**WARNING** Doing this will delete any files you already have on the PC, make sure you back anything important up or it will be lost forever!

1)When you bought the computer you should have gotten a "Recovery Disk", If Windows came preinstalled on your PC but the manufacturer didn't provide a full Windows XP CD, contact the company and ask for one (you did pay for it, after all). In most cases, you'll get one for free, no questions asked.

2)Reboot the PC

3) While starting up press del, this should take you to a blue screen with a few options, If you see the windows logo you're too late. If del doesn't work try using F2, different PCs have different ways to get to this screen

4)After being confronted by a rather scary looking blue screen with many options, look for something along the lines of "boot order", it may well be inside "Advanced BIOS features"

5) Change the first boot device to CD if it is not already the first.

6)Insert the Recovery disk into the CD drive, Save and exit the BIOS (blue screen), this will restart the PC

7) Now the system will boot from the cd, just follow the on screen instructions, and you'll have a brand new install of your operating system. Its a pain to reinstall every program you had before, but if its either that or have a PC that doesn't work... well... I think it would be worth it somehow.

8) The very first thing to do on any new PC is get anti-virus software onto it, if you have it on a disk, just install it like before, If not i'd recommend downloading AVG for free until you get something better, I know many people that just use the free AVG scanner, it's not the best, but it IS free.

9)Breathe a sigh of relief because its all over :)

Hope this helped.

MAke sure the virus scanner is up to date (download any updates it needs), then do a full scan and get it to remove any viruses it finds.

Then get a spyware scanner (ad-aware or Spybot are both good, and are free). Do a full scan with one of those. Again, let the program fix any problems that it finds.

If you're lucky, this will fix everything. But if you're still not happy with the performance, or if things still seem wrong, you will need to reinstall Windows, your programs, and all your data. Not difficult if you have all the necessary CDs to hand, plus serial numbers, plus backups.

Talking of which, if you don't have backups of your important documents, make some now before the computer totally dies.

Make sure your anti-virus, anti-malware program is updated so that it has the latest definitions, then run the scan again. If that doesn't work, have your ex pay to get your computer fixed, or you can try and do it yourself.

You'll probably need to wipe out your hard drive so make sure to save your data on to DVD or CD disks. Do a "format" and reinstall all your software. You might be able to do that yourself if you have the recovery discs that came with your computer. Contact the manufacturer for intructions on reinstalling your software. Sometimes the backup software is in a partition on your hard drive, sometimes its on DVD or CD disks that came with your computer. Its usually not too hard to do yourself.

Your best bet is if you have your recovery software's is to do a full recovery on your computer. What you have described is a serious of virus on your computer. The bad part is that if you did not back up your system you will loose all the information on it. The recovery software should walk you through what you need to do?

Not the answer you want to hear, but I am with Steve T on this one.

When a system is really Maha-infected,it is easier to just reformat and reinstal Windows (it is windows, right?).

If you try system restore, like the other poster said, there is a good chance System Volume is also infected, and you are just restoreing to earlier in your infected state.

As you can get online, you might try one of the help forums such as "Castle Cops" or "Bleeping Computer."

they will ask you to download a program called "Hi-Jack This",and post the log it makes back to their forum.

They will then talk you through the process of cleaning your machine.

They are really very good, and its free.

the problem is they are always busy, and it may take a week for them to get to you.

Of course if you are cute, you can just grin at a geek, and he will fix your machine for free.

WARNING DO NOT INSTALL ANY OTHER FREE SOFTWARE OTHER THAN MICROSOFT.

Go to Microsoft.com(link below) and run and download the onecare pc cleaner. You can even download the Onecare PC security Suite for 90 days. That bad boy cleans your computer like a hooker on a mission. And oh, you computer's registry is corrupted. Your exe. files are corrupted, and so to move forward you will uninstall any security software on your computer. Make sure to have your window firewall up and running, while you are running the windows PC cleaner.
