I am in the middle of having to format my wifes computer because of spyware eating up the system. Is there a way to stop this from happening. She is using a firewalled connection and everything.

try super antispyware

if that doesnt work, use the below list STEP BY STEP and its 100% gone

get these free tools... adaware(lavasoft.com) spybot(safer-networking.org) HiJackThis(trend.com) winsockfix v1.2(majorgeeks.com) CCleaner (ccleaner.com)

install and run the adaware/spybot updater

reboot safe mode w/ networking (continually press f8 upon reboot)

Run adaware and spybot deleting anything they find.

Run Hijackthis (this shows all BHO's on ur browser~very important)

Run CCleaner (Repair/delete anything it finds)

Run free online scan (trend.com bitdefender.com pandasoftware.com) remove any findings

Yes. The best way to stop this from happening is to use an operating system that isn't plagued by spyware. A good choice here is Ubuntu Linux (free):

http://www.ubuntu.com

Remember that firewalls don't stop spyware infections.

If you must use Microsoft Windows, then you'll have a long, hard slog ahead of you to keep the system from being plagued with malware. Make sure that you only connect it to the internet when absolutely necessary. Run a good security suite, such as McAfee's 12-in-1

http://www.mcafee.com

Always apply all security patches from Microsoft. Upgrade IE to Firefox (use NoScript and Adblock). Don't use MSN, use Pidgin instead.

firewalls doesnt protect you against spyware, firewall proxy data through ur network..

install free anti spyware software try AVG antispyware or spyware doctor or adware... All good, all solve problems with varying levels of success and ease of use.

make sure you install an antivirus software too

remember,Just like your anti-virus program, you need to update the signatures in your anti-spyware program so that it will catch new spyware programs that are released.

Hi, I too had faced a similiar problem with my laptop last week, tried norton internet security, Mcafee and even AVG anti spyware, none seemed to remove the spyware completely.

Then on the last go tried Super Anti Spyware Software, It works marvellously and even very easy to download.

try www.download.com for the 30 day trial.

Run Norton or AVG Anitvirus. install it from a cd and scan the pc. it will detect the spyware.. I'm telling to run from a cd not from net because downloading from net might bring more spyware in ur computer. ok

It's not that difficult really. One of the best tips I can give you is use a limited user account for all your web surfing.

I strongly recommend you to install "Spybot" from here:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index...

also, beside the Spybot, you should also download "Ad-Aware" you can download it for free from here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

run both programs, and they will get rid off all the spywares on your computer.

good luck
