i can't log in to my hotmail account, unable to reset password.?

Question

when i try and log in to my hotmail email account, i enter my email address then password, but it then takes me to another page which gives me reset password instructions. so, when i follow the instructions it asks me to input the visual icons which appear on the screen, then it takes me to another page and says my reset password instructions will be sent to my email. But i cant access my email so how on earth am i meant to access the password reset instructions???? Can anyone help me please????

When you originally set up the hotmail account did they ask you to enter an alternative email?

That is an alternative email address you gave Hotmail at the time of registration.

When Hotmail is down for you the email is sent to the secondary address.
