It is a rogue anti-spyware program similar to the well known XP Antivirus rogue application.

Antivirus XP 2008 (or AntivirusXP2008, AntiVirXP08, AntivirusXP 2008) is a rogue antispyware program. This program is a clone of Xp Antivirus, XPAntivirus2008, Antivirus2008, Antivirus 2008. Or you can say that Antivirus XP 2008 is just XPAntivirus2008 by another name. Just like Xp Antivirus, Antivirus XP 2008 uses fake pop up messages, fake security warnings to trick user into buying "full" version of Antivirus XP 2008.

I'd recommend not to install so many softwares to fight a nasty, yet single infection. What's the point of having half a dozen programs more?

Ideally, it's easier to tell what's infected by looking at a system scan log. But anyway, XP antivirus should be removed via Windows Safe Mode.

To get there, hold F8 key as you restart, and wait until Boot Menu appears. Choose Safe Mode with Networking.

a-suqared offers a free command-line tool to fight this malware; it beautifully runs in Safe Mode and needs no installation. Same company offers HiJackFree (also free, as you might guess), which might be of help.

The reason behind using Safe Mode is simple: most malware is not loaded into memory when in Safe Mode, so it's far easier to have it removed instantly.

Firstly, antivirus programs will NOT remove these as they are malicious codecs, although they may find reference to them and remove it but upon rebooting it's back again.

Therefore you need to use a 'layered' approach to removing this parasite which has been successful in hundreds of cases

The first 4 programs usually resolve this and all are 100% free.

Use thesein the order listed:

Remove Restrictions Tool:

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/RRT-Remove-Ristrictions-Tool-Download-68926.html

Download from Softpedia Secure Download (RO), install, run and check all boxes then click Apply and then reboot. This tool re-enables what codecs/viruses have disabled.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?hhTest=1.

Download, install, update and select Full Scan.

Remove all infections that it finds after scan.

SmitFraud Removal

This tool will remove Desktop hijacking malware. Firstly, download the removal tool from here:

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

then follow the instructions on the same page

Spybot S&D:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Download, install, update and Immunize, turn off Tea Timer then click 'Check for problems' then when complete select all and then 'Fix Checked'

Spyware Doctor Free Basic Edition - Realtime monitoring:

http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer_new.html?hl=en&gl=us&ciNum=12

Its free with Google pack, untick all boxes except Spyware Doctor. Download install, update and run.

VundoFix:

http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/global/removal_tool/threat_writeups/FixVundo.exe

Disconnect your computer from the internet

Run vundo

Restart your computer

Run the tool again to ensure no traces are left.

If there are the reboot into Safe Mode and run FixVundo again.

If your desktop has changed or icons are missing also use:

Wallpaper Hijacker Removal Tool:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Wallpaper_Hijack_Remover_d4816.html

Note: You should hit all "Repair" buttons even though it may not say "Found!" This will fix a wallpaper hijack everytime if all repair buttons are pressed.

A-Squared Free:

http://www.download.com/A-squared-Free/3000-2239_4-10262215.html

This is not a limited version but a full tool to clean your computer from Malware, Spyware, Trojans, Backdoors, Worms, Dialers and Keyloggers.

How to use:

Download, install and it will ask to check for updates, which should be allowed and will take a few minutes initially, it will then restart the program for updates to take effect. Click on Scan and ensure deep Scan is selected then click the Scan button.

If the problem persists, turn OFF System Restore, Right click My computer > select Properties > System Restore Tab > Tick Turn Off System restore on all drives and scan with the above programs in Safe Mode - tap F8 during boot before Windows splash screen and select Safe Mode.

After scans are complete and machine is clean remember to turn system restore back ON and create a new restore point.
