You may not have a popup problem - because you may have downloaded a trojan (a fake anti-virus program) instead. If a message box appeared in the middle of your screen and and said that it had found loads of viruses and you clicked the OK button, then it downloaded and installed the trojan onto your computer.

If your computer is running slow and there is a lot of hard disk activity as well as popups appearing, then almost certainly you have a trojan installed. The trojan will try to direct you to buy a product and you will need to Google the name of that product in order to find out how to get rid of the trojan.

Hmmm. Most Internet Browsers like Firefox can block pop-ups, but there is no real way to completely stop pop-ups. Don't download any software (unless you can find and read a complete license), for it may just contain a virus or trojan that can destroy your computer. Also, sites like "movie sites" tend to have more pop-ups. Sticking to YouTube or myspace videos will not give you pop-ups, but you can have a great video watching experience. =]

Even if you have a pop up blocker ad's can still sneak there way onto your machine. I'm not to thrilled with free but you can try this.

Here is another one. It's a online scanner. Works pretty good. I have used both.

I'd recommend Ad-Aware.It is free and you can download it from www.lavasoft.com. Your problem may be spyware but if it is a virus that causes pop-ups then you have to purchase anti-virus programs.

ray has a bit of insight worth looking into; usually the sudden appearance of behavior, after a particular specific action, indicate a more sinister reason for the behavior.

Run scans for malware, using trusted & updated applications for starters.

Do you use firefox? You can ask your browser to block them. I don't know how to do it in Internet Explorer. In firefox go to tools, options, content and check the block box. The tools tab is located at the top left of the screen.
