I have not been able to update Norton anti virus or Windows. Whenever I try to update either one of them, the computer comes up with the error the connection has failed. I had a Norton service rep try to fix it. He could not fix it, so he referred me to Norton virus specialist. The consultation costs a $100. I think they can fix it, but I want to see if their is another way to fix this before i start spending a lot of money. I tried a free virus scanner and that won't update either. It says connection failed too when trying to update.

You have got what I just removed now. You will not be able to start any program now. So do this: 1. Start your computer. 2. Quickly click on your norton virus to scan the system. If you don't hurry up the antivirus soft will start and block you from doing this by saying that your norton virus software is infected. 3. Once the scanning begins, the virus wont be able to stop it. So use the time to remove the spyware. 4. Even after you remove the virus your IE will be disabled cuz the virus changes the proxy setting. I dont know how to fix it. I asked about it here on yahoo answers.

Before you give Norton yet more money to cure a problem their AV should cure, read this:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2342634,00.asp

They use the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

http://www.malwarebytes.org

Get a friend to download it onto their desktop, save the set-up (.exe) file to CD or a flash drive, install on your pc. Run a full scan in Safe Mode http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm

If you can't do that, rather than pay Norton, get expert free advice from a specialist malware-removal forum, e.g.

Use someone else's computer. Use a clean USB drive--i.e. never connected to your computer. Download MalWareBytes into the USB drive.

Go back to your computer. Disconnect your internet from your computer, or unplug the modem.

Run & install the MalWareBytes program, and follow it's instructions. It's a good little program, helped me to clean off several dastardly apps off a neighbors laptop recently. Their kid likes to click "Yes" to everything, and then they install Rogue Antivirus 2009 (freaking difficult one that), and 4 more "Free" anti-virus hijacker programs. But MalWareBytes was able to remove them all...which is great, because it was bad. Antivirus 2009 redirected the web-page if you tried to find out how to remove it!

Start your computer in safe mode then get MalwareBytes. I had a virus and got the blue screen of death after I got rid of the virus which cost 80$ to fix.

May be the virus has effected the windows updating procedure.

If you repair your windows using the windows CD(don't format it), then it may be possible that it will restore the files to the original form.

To do that boot your system with Windows CD>accept the EULA(end user licence agreement)>repair windows(path of your Windows partition).

Good luck

First try to scan by using online scanner.

If it doesnt then try to format OS, Its useless to spend 100$ for Installing norton antivirus.

You can maybe try to restore back to an older day when you did not have the problem. Maybe, viruses are very hard to rid of sometimes.
