have spyware and for 49.95 I can buy protection for the computer. This is crazy since I have the free virus protection from a different source. This is the first time I have seen this and sometime it will not let me access the Yahoo web page. Is this a virus of some kind?

Yes, you have malware on your computer if you are getting those type of pop-ups. Try downloading one or more of these free products and run full system scans.

AntiSpyware Applications

SuperAntispyware

http://superantispyware.com/

Spybot S&D (free version requires manual updating)

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

Adaware from Lavasoft (free version requires automatic updating)

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after installation and updating)

If you are successful in getting the malware removed, you may want to also download a spyware blocker. This is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources. It blocks spyware before it installs.

SpywareBlaster (inoculates, not a spyware removal tool)

If it is impeding you from surfing websites, you may have some kind of malware on your system (which calls to question the effectivness of the free stuff you have). Chances are, it is this malware that is asking you for $49.95.

You may want ot pony up for a more reliable solution

The software that announces with popups saying your pc is in danger and offer you to download it or buy it is rogue or false. It will open the door to lots of infections. Run a good antisypware like Malware Bytes, Superantispyware or A-squared (Stay away from Ad-Aware, it just catches cookies and basic hijacks) and immunize with Spybot.

The Malware Bytes site has a list of rogue software

MALWARE. Your screwed. If you like, call or email the company that is sending the error. Tell them that you would like to avoid purchasing their software and would like for them to remove the error off your computer. After they babble about how they cannot do that. Tell them you are reporting them to the BBB. FBI, CIA and any other entity you can think of. It amy or may not scare them enough to walk you through the problem. This should be illiegal, but it isnot.
