AV programs are necessary, but Mbam will detect, and remove more than any AV.

Here is a comparison of the free AV's:

http://dottech.org/freeware-reviews/14151/avira-vs-avast-vs-avg-a-comprehensive-comparison-to-help-you-decide-which-free-anti-malware-security-software-you-should-use/

Your teacher was right, norton sucks, especially for how much resources it takes, I would chose either Avira, or Avast for free. F secure is the best one you can get if you don't mind paying, any of those will give you better AV protection than norton.

Mbam is an AntiMalware program that also detects (as it's name suggests) all kinds of malware, and will find more things on a system than any AV. It is free, and you can download it here:

You will also want SuperAntiSpyware, as this is the best detector/remover of spyware. Also free.

Avira or Avast, and these two programs, and you will have really good protection.

Good luck.

NIS should do, provided you have the antispyware version and it is enabled. Defender may do, but it is alleged that defender misses things that other scanners detect as spyware . It's always best to have at least 2 different scanners available. Neither of these will catch all tracking cookies. For this you need Ad-Aware, Spybot, or asquared. If you are reasonably careful in what you do on the web it's possible that you will never get hit by malware, but best to be sure.

Microsoft’s Security Essentials, which has been a favorite anti-malware application for a while and it’s free, unobtrusive, and it doesn’t slow your PC down, but now it’s even better with the new 2.0 release, which adds network filtering, heuristic protection, and more.

Just to be clear and direct with you: we absolutely recommend Microsoft Security Essentials as your anti-malware / anti-virus utility over any other option—and how can you argue? It’s totally free!

New Features in 2.0

Here’s all of the new features in the latest release, which make it even more of a must-download:

* Network Traffic Inspection integrates into the network system and monitors the traffic at a low level without slowing down your PC, so it can actually detect threats before they get to your PC.

* Internet Explorer Integration blocks malicious scripts before IE even starts running them—clearly a big security advantage.

* Heuristic Scanning Engine finds malware that hasn’t been previously detected by scanning for certain types of attacks. This provides even more protection than just through virus definitions.

These new features make MSE on par with other anti-malware applications, especially the heuristic scanning, which has been the only complaint that anybody could make against MSE in the past—but now it has it.

Disabling the New Features (Though You Shouldn’t)

If you head into Settings –> Real-time protection, you can remove “Enable behavior monitoring” to disable the heuristic scanning, or uncheck “Enable Network Inspection System” to remove the network traffic filtering.

Limiting CPU Usage

We can’t remember if this is a new feature or not, but you can head into Settings –> Scheduled Scan to reduce the CPU usage during the weekly scan—normally the weekly scan only starts when you’re not using the PC, but if you sit back down on the PC while the scheduled scan is going, performance will be less impacted with lower CPU usage.

Again, you should download this new version. It’s excellent. Note: you should make sure you only have a single anti-virus utility installed at a time.

All questions = no!

Security is the first.

First and foremost, don't listen to the others, Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira Antivir, and AVAST! are okay security software, but you are guaranteed to get many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many manymany many many many many many many many many many manymany many many many many many many many many many manymany many many many many many many many many many many viruses from those products, in the real world. You will need layered protection. Comodo is the best.

Download the free Comodo Internet Security product from comodo.com.(make sure you get the free version) It contains antivirus, top notch firewall, and a new technology that most vendors aren't using, HIPS (Defense +), the program might be complicated but you can get a hang of it, if not check out languy99 video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bj_Tg8EeY-s) on how to Set up Comodo Internet Security and his review on it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oGJ0UrwkP8&feature=channel_video_title), also watch his Cleaning Computer tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdI87YbVnoc), it is a very good product and highly recommended, also visit the website of Comodo and download the following to increase security:

Download Comodo System Cleaner- to clean out junk files.

Download Comodo Backup- backup important data

Download Comodo Programs Manager - powerfully delete unwanted software

Download Comodo Cleaning Essentials - use KillSwitch as a task manager to protect from potentially unwanted processes, and use Malware Cleaner to remove malware that the normal product cannot

Download Comodo Antispam- spam protection

Download Comodo Anti-Malware

Download Comodo Cloud Scanner

Download Comodo Dragon - fast internet browser

Download Comodo SecureDNS

For even more protection download the following:

Revo Uninstaller (designed to Complement Comodo Programs Manager_

Download CCleaner (designed to complement Comodo System Cleaner)

Smart Defrag

Malwarebytes Antimalware, Superantispyware, (designed to complement Comodo Cleaning Essentials and Anti-malware)

Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome

Mcafee Siteadvisor

Norton Safeweb

This setup may seem like way too many programs, but trust me, this is the highest level of protection your system can maintain for free. If a program is not free, just don't use it.

If you are willing to pay, remove all Comodo Products, mcafee siteadvisor, norton safeweb, and purchase.either:

Norton 360

Kaspersky Pure

Bitdefender Total Security

Make sure you use only one antivirus product at a time, or one setup at a time. Multiple antiviruses can cause slowdown, the Comodo setup, only has one antivirus so it is fine, but the paid products only have one, and don't have any others free or paid.

I've been using these products for years and have never encountered another virus problem, always viruses will get blocked, or you can use the separate scanners like Cleaning essentials, Comodo Anti-Malware, malwarebytes, superantispyware.

Trust me you will not get infected ever again.

Hope I was of assistance,

I use nod32 (well i use Eset suite which contains the firewall too) but if you wish to go down the 'free' route

Microsoft essentials is the one id pick, its much lower on resources than Norton..i HATE Norton with a passion.

Windows Defender doesn't detect viruses or trojans. It's an antispyware program put out by Microsoft and it's half-*** at that. There's better stuff out there. I personally use Norton Internet Security, but if for some reason Norton fails me then I have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Pro and SUPERAntispyware Pro backing me up.
