There is a saying that goes "prevention is better than cure". A firewall in layman terms is essentially a program wich filters network data to decide whether or not to forward them to their destination or to deny it. Well, getting to the point there are good free firewalls, such as:

-sygate

-zone alarm

-xp

some other are also very good but are not for free, but you can make the download with emule:

-Black Ice defender

-Lockdown 2000

No firewall is best until configured properly.



You can use windows xp firewall or zonealarm(it will take additional resources)



you may also get tiny firewall, and the best I consider is outpost personal firewall but I don't think if it's free.
