The IP tells who the ISP is. Then you illegally subpoena the ISP by providing the IP address, the time it was active, and requesting the name and physical address of the user.

That's what RIAA is doing.

I believe the most information you can get from an IP address (legally) is the company that provides internet to that IP as well as where the company is located. I think if you could get a person's home address, phone number, etc., that would be illegal, but I'm not 100% sure.

Check the source and see what you can get.

From what i've been told, yes, it can. This is NOT the dynamic ip that is assigned from the ISP (Internet Service Provider) as this one changes every time you log in and out of the service, depending on which service provider has this. It can be sometimes spot on or it will dictacte location within a 6 mile radius i have been made aware of. I'll make a suggestion to you, and that is to download a safe surf software application, such as "Anonymiser". You can set up which sites are safe that you regularly use within it, and others will be blocked as you use the anonymiser itself. Cool hey! Also, i've noticed that C.O.M.O.D.O firewall comes with a Safe Surf tool, so think about installing this if you haven't got it and disbale whatever firewall you have now. Hope this helps ya not worry anymore ;-]

Your IP address can tell someone what Internet Service Provider you are using. Go to www.arin.net and type in an IP address.

If you have an encrypted router and security software your pretty much protected from hackers.
