If you are not using a web based email (ie, you use outlook or outlook express, etc..) then you can get a virus whether you download an attachment or not. Also, since many people choose to view their emails in HTML and it can contain malicious code (see all the myspace hacks)... then it is possible to become infected just by viewing an email.
This is why the preview pane is a known security vulnerability.
If you are viewing your email via your web browser then you are safe in opening the email (NOT the attachment)... and if you are in receipt of spam and you know how to view full headers and perform a WHOIS search then you should report any and all spam to the authorities and the spammers ISPs so that they can take appropriate action. Otherwise it will just continue. After you report it, add them to your junk mail filter (though this will do little if they are changing their email address which is usually spoofed - hence, why they should be reported).
As for opening email attachments... it is never a good idea, not even from people you know, since they could be infected and not even know they are sending you an attachment. This is why investing in a proper security suite from a reliable vendor is so important and ensuring it is enabled, properly configured, and kept up to date ... as well as your operating system and any programs you use.

As long as you don't open them, nothing will happen. If you recieve an attachment from someone you do not know, do not open it. The attachment will more than likely contain a virus that can hurt your computer. Do not open the e-mail either. A lot of spam e-mails will notify the sender that the e-mail address is active once the e-mail is open, meaning that more spam will be sent to your e-mail address. Like thethirdseagull said, sometimes viruses will infect your friends computers and family computers and send out mass spam mail with the same virus. If you recieve an attachment from a friend or family member that you were not expecting, contact that person and ask if they sent you an e-mail with an attachment, if they say they didn't, then do not open the e-mail.
When people contact you through yahoo answers, they are not e-mailing you directly as they have no access to your e-mail address. They are sending the message to yahoo and yahoo is sending the message to you.

If you are receiving E Mails from people you do not know, the rule is dont open them. Just delete them into your junk mail. Only open E Mail from people you know. It could harm your computer if there is a virus in an E Mail you dont know who its from and you open it.

if you have no idea who the person that sent you the email is or recongnize the e-mail address itself do not open it because there are so many attachments and so much junk out there that people can throw your way.what i do is that if i do not know someone or something i do not even open the e-mail so i am safer that way.as long as you do not open anything nothing will happen.

if you continually get from the same ones you should be able to put them on a blocked sender list. the only time it can hurt your computer is if you open attachements on these e-mails. you are doing the right thing by deleting them if you don't know the sender.

never open attachments from unknown people. Some viruses infect your friends computer and the virus automatically sends virus using their email to you.
so if you suddenly get a weird message from your brother saying "hey there sexy, you want to go out on a date with me?" or something completely weird that your friend will never say, dont open it.
there are some programs that check your email before they are put in the inbox
one program is Avast. Its free too.
