I'm a AVG fan because it just works, is fairly light on resources... http://free.grisoft.com/

There are so many applications and possibilities for optimizing Windows...

Disable some services you might not need...

Services are programs that run whenever you power on your PC. That means they are always loaded in memory, taking space and CPU time. Microsoft did their best and your PC runs services to print documents, to browse Internet, to run Windows Messenger or to allow remote connections to your PC.

But more likely than not, you just don’t need all of them! To really speed up your PC you need to disable many of the services.

Do not use "msconfig" to disable services, type "services.msc" in the Run box instead!

Press your Windows key and then hit the "R" button. This will open up your Run command box.

The Start icon on your bottom left tool bar, then in xp there is a 'run' on the menu. In vista you can go to start/all programs/accessories/run

The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware Profiles, you can disable services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console (services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is disabling the service.

The "Disable All" button also scares me. It should not even be there as no reason exists to justify disabling "everything."

Go here for more info on what is safe... Configurations: http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/OSguides.htm then pick your Operating System.

And try these Black Viper's Top 9 tweaks for a faster (and less annoying) Vista PC: http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/supertweaks.htm

For XP... http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/supertweaks.htm

There are of course other things you can do to speed up your computer. Look at disabling extra visual effects...

Adjust visual effects... You can optimize performance by changing how menus and windows appear.

To do this... Right Click on Computer on Desktop > Choose Properties > Advance System Setting > Under... Performance... Choose... Setting > Choose... Adjust for Best Performance > Then... Apply > Then...Ok

Turning off NTFS indexing and other tweaks. All of these can speed up your PC.

Well how do you know its had viruses if you've got no anti-virus software?? (and if you do why are you asking this question).

But yeah you can download, Spybot - Search & Destroy which will kick off any spy/ad/mal ware you have picked up, also to kick off any viruses use AVG 7.5.524 (not the newest version but the newest version slows down everybodys computers a lot) and is weekly updated!

Stopping programs at start up will help free up RAM also, go on run and type "msconfig" then click on the "startup" tab...untick everthing except you anti-virus and "ctfmon.exe" and you computer should be as clean as a whistle!

Cheers,

Shed

I like others here recomend grisoft avg, this is a very good antivirus program and it is Free. (http://free.grisoft.com) After you install this antivirus program do a scan right away. After the scan has finish run a Disk Cleanup and after the disk cleanup finishes run a Disk Defrag, by doing all of these that are mention here will increast your computer speed. Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> then disk cleanup and later disk defrag. Good Luck

There are several primary reasons could cause your computer to be slow and also some softwares you can download to speed up it.

First,Corruption and Errors within your registry. The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:

Get rid of it! Delete it! Go to Add/Remove methods, and delete, then in Windows Explorer. Download CCleaner,(loose), and wipe it absolutely out. Then use different anti-undercover agent/virus application. You want the defense safety of direction, however I might recommend in contrast one. Email by way of Yahoo Answers should you wish to eliminate it, and feature problem doing so.
