My computer isn't really slow but it is slower then usual lately. I do not have a virus because I've done numerous scans & I really don't go to unknown sites. I'm a facebook, myspace, yahoo, and that's it kind of person so yes, I really don't have a virus. A friend told me having history and cookies and etc. on my computer can make it work slower. He also said just selecting clear all won't actually clear it all from the hard drive (I use firefox and have Windows XP). I forget how he said to do it manually and I'm having an extremely hard time finding a way to do it (that I can understand). So I'm asking for a very computer savy person's help to give me simple steps to permanently get rid of these junk files if that's what they're considered to be.

Also, doing research on this I see a lot of good things about the program CCleaner. What is it? What does exactly do? I know it deletes the stuff I want to delete (Cookies, Cache, History, etc.) but does it ACTUALLY permanently remove it? Do to the fact that it's free I don't know if it will do what I'm trying to do. In advance, thank you for your help.

CCleaner is a very good program; I have used it for more than 2 years.

Wikipedia article about CCleaner:

You can delete the history, etc. files from within Internet Explorer and Firefox, etc., and don't need CCleaner to erase them. If you just let files accumulate in the Temporary Internet Files folder, the huge number of files causes the Operating System to slow down; erasing those files helps a whole lot. What is good about CCleaner is that it will list the files for you if you want to see them before you delete them.

CCleaner also removes "Flash Cookies" which IE does not delete. Every website that uses Flash animation puts such a "cookie" on your computer.

You can also defragment your hard drive; Windows has a built-in defragmenting program. If you have never run the defragmenting program, the first time will take quite a while.

CCleaner is a good program for deleting unwanted "crap" files. Your friend's suggestion to remove the cookies/history/etc...is not a bad one, but it doesn't strike me as the first solution to try though. Cooies and history and cache problems were more of an issue when computers had limited memory. Today's machines have much much more space, and resultingly, don't freak out about a lot of cookies anymore.

Whenever I get asked to help with a slow-performing computer, the first thing I do is scan for spyware. Spyware is separate from viruses in the fact that they can sit in your computer and run for a long time without being detected. One by itself is not enough to be noticeable, but once you get several dozen of them running...well, things get sluggish.

With that in mind, I highly recommend a program called Malwarebytes. It is specifically designed to hunt down spyware and other tracking programs that you may not even know are there. It's free, and it's highly accredited.

I would install it, give it a run, see what it finds. I can almost guarantee you that there will be a massive number of items found.

If you're still lacking in performance, then give CCleaner a go.

If you are still slow...just reinstall Windows. There honestly isn't a better performance boost than a brand-new OS.

Computer errors:

Infect spyware

Registry problem

You are infected with spyware if:

* You see too much pop-up advertisements.

* Your browser has toolbars that you haven't installed.

* Your homepage has changed (and you can't change it back).

* Other settings have changed without your permission.

* Your computer is slow.

To get rid of spyware and keep your computer clean you can use an antispyware or even more.

You can download a antispyware software.
