I was considering downloading Limewire and I heard that you need good anti virus software and firewall in order to use it safely. I don't know much about this... help! any suggestions for some secure programs to use, tips, or explinations are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

For your convenience I have listed a few that are available for download and are completely free: I will not get involved with the rights and wrongs of each package or its effectiveness or indeed “This is best” or “This is crap” statements. Whatever you do, just make sure you have one of each type installed, updated and fully working:

good question I seem to get people asking me more and more about this subject being who my mom is and who I am. Both mom and I have been in the black yrs ago wondering the same. People will more than likely advise Macafe and norton. But then again ones that actually get a brain transplant after using it realize those anti-viruses dont work. In fact norton can keep many files in your computer that will keep you from installing someone's elses anti-virus software. What seems to help me out when im in a bind is AVG there is a free version, you might have to email that company to get a free registration code to use it. But also need to think of anti-spyware software too. Simply google or yahoo search for this "Spybot search and destroy". Now dont make the mistake others have if you do look for this software make sure you add all those words. There is two different spybots out there, there is one called Spybot then there is spybot search and destroy. Spybot: aint free, installs spys that the company made *of course their anti-spyware software wont detect their OWN viruses. Spybot search and destroy: free and also free of viruses. Have fun hope this works and btw no programs will work if you dont have them downloading updates.

There are a heap of dos and don'ts that you have to be aware of when using Limewire to avoid viruses. Importantly, make sure that the file size looks appropriate to the type of file you are trying to download. You should never, for example, download an MP3 file for a 3 or 4 minute song that is much less than about 1 meg per minute of playback. You would also not download an MP3 with a .exe file extension. I would recommend AVG as a great free virus software. You can get it here. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff It even automatically updates daily for you.

I use Spy Sweeper and am very pleased with what it does, the easiness to schedule sweeps or to have unscheduled sweeps and the assistance I receive if I have questions. My notebook crashed last week and it was easy to again download the software through instructions I received from the company.

For the record, Spy Sweeper has an excellent anti-virus software package. I wish the know-it-all's who feed incorrect information in their answers would do some simple homework before making foolish and incorrect statements.

(Answerer Chase B., ya don't need an apostrophe there in that "virus's"--it's actually "virusEs.")

Well, Swimmer, I'm using Norton AntiVirus right as we speak, because I've heard from several people over time that Norton makes really good, solid software.

Of course, there are other good ones, too, like McAfee. That's another well-known, popular one (probably popular like Norton because I've heard it works well, too).

But ya know, time will tell. We'll see if those don't slow the system down too much. We'll see if there's not something that comes up as even better than those two...

Richard C., Spy Sweeper is for spyware and adware rather than viruses, though. They're different things.

MAC!!!!!

But for windows, there is nothing really free that works well, just use windows firewall and watch your downloads, lots of trouble for people using limewire recently

I advise you don't get mcafee or norton! b/c they require you to activate every year for a fee. I advise you to use Yahoo antivirus. Go onto your yahoo page and scroll down to the bottom, you should see yahoo software. Click on that and pick yahoo antivirus and download it. It is a lite verson and won't slow down your pc like macafee or norton will. You should try it, plus everything is free, including updates.
