an IP address is something like a unique address that can identify your computer and separates it from the rest, kind like an identification card. Which can be used to tell which country you are in and so on etc...
To find out your IP address on your computer you can go to sites like http://www.whatismyip.com for a easier way of finding out or you could go to your DOS prompt (assuming you are using Windows)
One way is to:
1. Go to Start menu and select Run
2. Type cmd in the box that opens
3. Click OK
4. In the new window type ipconfig
5. Hit the Enter key
Another way is to go the the Start Menu
> All Programs
> Accessories
> and when the command prompt window pops up type in ipconfig
Also if you want to connect to or access another computer, make sure that the other computer is on as well... else even if you have everything you need you won't be able to do anything =)

An IP address (or Internet Protocol address) is a unique address that certain electronic devices use in order to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol standard (IP)—in simpler terms, a computer address. Any participating network device—including routers, switches, computers, infrastructure servers (e.g., NTP, DNS, DHCP, SNMP, etc.), printers, Internet fax machines, and some telephones—can have its own IP address that is unique within the scope of the specific network. Some IP addresses are intended to be unique within the scope of the global Internet, while others need to be unique only within the scope of an enterprise

The easiest way to determine your IP address is to visit http://KnowUrIP.com
An Ip address is an exclusive number all information technology devices (printers, routers, modems, etc.) use which identifies and allows them the ability to communicate with each other on a computer network. There is a standard of communication which is called an Internet Protocol standard (IP). In layman’s terms it is the same as your home address. In order for you to receive snail mail at home the sending party must have your correct mailing address (IP address) in your town (network) or you do not receive bills, pizza coupons or your tax refund. The same is true for all equipment on the internet. Without this specific address, information cannot be received. IP addresses may either be assigned permanently for an Email server/Business server or a permanent home resident or temporarily, from a pool of available addresses (first come first serve) from your Internet Service Provider. A permanent number may not be available in all areas and may cost extra so be sure to ask your ISP.

Assuming you're using MS Windows:
1. Go to Start menu and select Run
2. Type cmd in the box that opens
3. Click OK
4. In the new window type ipconfig
5. Hit the Enter key
Your IP address is like the home address for your house or apartment. Think of it like someone sending you letter via the post office from another state.
They put a return address (or their computer's IP address) and your home address on the envelope then take it to the post office. The post office sees what state is in your address and sends it to a second post office in that state.
The second post office looks at what city your address is in and sends it to a post office in your city which then gets delivered to your house.

An ip address is an "internet protocol" address. It is basically a number which identifies a certain computers internet whereabouts.
Find it like this:
Click the "start menu",
click on "Run..."
type "cmd" in the entry line(without the brackets)
that will open command prompt, which is a window with a black background.
type "ip config" in the command prompt window(without the brackets) and hit enter
that will tell you your ip address.

Ip address:computer::Home address:house
So basically an ip address is where other computers "mail" you information that you ask for.
It is extremely easy to find out what your ip address is and as you can see, others have posted links for you to find out what yours is.
If you want to find out the ip addresses of your friends, ask her to tell you what it is. If you don't have the tools pre-installed, then it can be one hack of a roller-coaster.
