My computer needs your help....it has no viruses, spyware, or such but it keeps....?

My computer keeps freezing for no reason. For the past three days every game I play freezes, every dvd will freeze, and even firefox and explorer will freeze and not respond. What gives? I have 72% free and everything has been defragmented.

You may have fragments of a virus or spyware. I would suggest that you download the free version of Superantispyware. This program is well known to find what all other miss. Plus you will get daily auto. updates.

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.



First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space.Here is how:



1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser

2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".

3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.

4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.

5. Click OK.



3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:



1. Open your Start menu.

2. Click Run

3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"

4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab

5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.

6. Click "OK"



Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs.

theres something wrong with the registry. Download superantispyware to make sure there isn't spyware on the computer and a anti-virus to make sure there isn't any viruses. Then, install CCleaner www.ccleaner.com and run scans on Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System. Fix everything. Then run scans on the registry. Fix everything. The mere fact that you claim to have no malware is simply not enough proof for me. Hopefully you are using a proper security suite (antivirus, antispyware, firewall, antiadware, etc) from a reliable vendor (mcafee, norton, etc) that is properly configured and completely up to date.



And hopefully you have kept windows updates completely up to date.



These would be the first thing I would check. Forcing manual updates and turning off all programs and then running a complete scan. I would also recommend running a web based scan from a reliable vendor like symantec.com or trendmicro.com to ensure your security has not been corrupted or subverted.



Your claim of "72% free" also doesn't tell me enough to convince me. What is 72% free? If it is your harddrive then I need to know :) but OK if you say so then we're back to "see above"



It sounds like you either have some malware or some vital windows file has become corrupted. If you truly run these troubleshooting steps I have mentioned and come up clean then I would suggest you attempt a repair with your windows CD.

Your hard disk may be getting full. You need at least 15% of free space for it to operate efficiently. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs & remove any applications you no longer use. How about removing all those pictures & music that is filling up your hard drive?



Finally, after you have done all the above may need to upgrade your RAM. So that you get the right type of RAM for your system do a free scan at Crucial to determine your RAM.
