Many alternatives, even.

Avast (http://www.avast.com/ ) and Avira (http://www.free-av.com/ ) both have *actual* real-time protection, and detect forced downloads before they can start.

Also, they offer boot-time scanning to get rid of root kits, Trojans and resident viruses (stuff AVG can't touch, because they start together with Windows, and are locked for deletion). Also, both update whenever an update is available (several times a day when necessary), while AVG updates on a fixed schedule.

I haven't used Avira, myself, but I've used Avast for several months, and its protection is excellent (even ties in with email programs, like Outlook and Thunderbird).

If you're willing to pay, get either Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/ ) or ESET's NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/ ). Both are about $40. NOD32 is a little more advanced in the interface, for the more experienced users, both both are excellent scanners.

EDIT

Also get a couple of anti-malware programs, to *complement* the virus protection.

Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/ ) - has real-time protection (called TeaTimer), but it uses a popup warning system that can become infuriatingly annoying after a while) - but its detection and removal is great - and it can also offer to run a scan at Windows startup if it finds something is in use.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is also pretty good. (http://www.malwarebytes.org/ )

I haven't made up my mind about SuperAntiSpyware... it ain't bad at first glance, but does some things that make me rub my chin in wonder.... restarting my PC to delete *cookies*???

Delete all the files in your computers Temporary Internet User folder by clicking start then control panel. Click Security Center. Click Internet Options. Click the General tab on the Internet Properties pop up page.

Find Browsing history and click the Settings button. Click the View Files button. The Temporary Internet User folder should open and display all the files. . Hit Control A on your keyboard to select all the files, then Control D to delete empty the folder. Click the Yes button on the pop up window. Nothing disastrous will happen to your computer. I do this at least once a day.

The free version of Spyware Doctor is excellent, better than the Adaware program, but I have that too. You can do either a full scan or a quick scan. It will find the tracking cookies and advertising cookies on hour hard-drive. I have it scheduled to do a full scan at 6 am and a quick scan at 6 pm everyday. Right now I have 14 infections on my hard drive. That might be the next thing I take care of, or I might wait until I'm ready to shut the computer down for the day. No. I usually don't turn the CPU off completely, but some times I do. My ISP provider has a free version of McAfee that I downloaded in April after I had serious problems, the infamous BSD, and my friend resurrected my CPU by re-loading Windows, Supposedly it should be good for a year, but I recently got a notification that it expires on Dec. 1 when I did my last reboot of my computer. So I'll have to download it again at the end of this month. It's free, so it's worth the small inconvenience and amount of time to download it again. Good luck

I would suggest that you run an antivirus scan, as well as an antispyware scan, just to be safe.

If you don't want to use AVG, perhaps you should see if your ISP provides you with a deal on another antivirus program.

If you need a free antispyware program, you may want to try using AdAware, which can be downloaded from the link below.

Good luck and I hope I helped you!

Firstly, I would advise a scan in safe node with the following, download, install, update then reboot into safe mode:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?hhTest=1.

Select Full Scan.

Remove all infections that it finds after scan.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition:

http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html

Select Scan your Computer, select your drive and select Perform Complete Scan and remove infections, then click on Preferences, click Repairs Tab and click on any of the System and Browser Repair Items that you may have problems with then click Perform Repair.

Use BOTH for maximum effect as they work slightly differently.

Better protection - use Avast anti-virus which better definitions, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit built in, faster and more reliable:

Spybot S&D:

http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=mncol&cdlPid=10861988

Download, install, update and Immunize, turn off Tea Timer then click 'Check for problems' then when complete select all and then 'Fix Checked'

Open Spybot, click on Mode, select Advanced, click on Tools then Resident and untick Resident 'Tea Timer'

Do NOT untick Resident 'SD Helper' as that is your protection.

Just run a basic scan over your computer, check your programs for installed programs that you don't recognize. Delete all of your history, change your yahoo password (and all other passwords accessed in your history/cookie), and let it go.
