So someone told me that she tracked a person down by getting the IP address of an anonymous question in ask.fm. I dont know if she was referring to me. My computer's name is my full name. Can someone find my computer's name by using my IP address? I'm in the Philippines if that helps.

Never put your real name on your system; that only makes another potential 'leak' of information in the event your firewall is breached somehow.

Security thru obscurity at every step these days, so change that 'computer name'.

--------

Provided you have a functional firewall, knowing an iP only discloses the location of your providers server that 'dumps' your traffic onto the 'Net.

It should be noted that the browser itself will automatically send tid-bits of info about the system, and as such is one avenue of info leakage.

With enough tid-bits, a specific person can be determined, but by far the most leveraged information is what you have disclosed thru social media sites...for instance, " I'm in the Philippines" as you've posted here.

Never underestimate the ways and means of someone with the intent of doing ill-will to others.

Technical know-how is readily available these days to anyone who seeks it.

This depends on your ISP. As your IP address is provided by your ISP, they choose what information to publish about you. Information could include anything from your name to your address to the type of computer. Using a website such as http://www.whois.net/ will allow you to look up your IP address and see what information is there. If you are concerned about someone tracking you, use a proxy server such as Tor.
