Question:
Is Spybot Search & Destroy anti spyware any good?

it's free, so I suspect that it's not worth much. But i could be wrong. Does it work?

By the way, every time i run a full scan, it finds like 3 to 14 things and i remove them. But it's always the same things, like 'DoubleClick" and a few more things that ALWAYS pop up. If this software doesn't like DoubleClick, why doesn't it prevent me from being attacked by them in the first place?> Removing spyware after the fact seems pointless.
But maybe i'm just clueless?

I can always tell if someone is up on current security programs, by their answers on your question. If they say it's good, I then know they really don't know much about current security programs. Spybot hasn't been very good for about 3 years. Will it find stuff yes it will, but it's detection rate is very low. it's removal rate is even lower. In all legit tests of anti-spyware programs Spybot comes in last or near last. SuperantiSpyware, Malwarebtes, A squared, PC tools spyware doctor, and Ad aware all do a better job. But Spybot does have realtime protection, and will do a fair job of blocking things from installing.

A better choice is a good anti-virus program. Like Norton or Kaspersky that have very high detection and removal rates for spyware. You can go to PC Mag and compare the different programs they run a good set of tests.

I guess it should be fine. Spybot Search and Destroy do not have real time protection, it should not try to kill the other anti-spyware. But I can't say about the other spyware. They might kill the Spybot Search and Destory. Normally, we do not recommend to use more than 2 similar software on the same computer, to avoid crashes.

In response to the emergence of spyware, a small industry has sprung up dealing in anti-spyware software. Running anti-spyware software has become a widely recognized element of computer security practices for computers, especially those running Microsoft Windows. A number of jurisdictions have passed anti-spyware laws, which usually target any software that is surreptitiously installed to control a user's computer. The US Federal Trade Commission has placed on the Internet a page of advice to consumers about how to lower the risk of spyware infection,

including a list of "do's" and "don'ts."

Yes. It is very good. No worries. The DoubleClick issue you are getting is normal. These are cookies left by advertising sites which you connect to when you go through Google or whatever. They are not dangerous at all, but SpyBot gets rid of them anyway because it's very thorough. They come back as soon as you start surfing again. You can tell SpyBot to ignore them.

Have you run immunization? Immunization help prevents a lot of spyware from getting onto your PC. Once I started using Spybot's immunization the amount of spyware I got on my PC dropped dramatically.

It's a very good program!

If in vista or 7 remember to right click the programme and open as adminstrator. There should also be an immunise button on the program itself which should prevent spyware aswell.

Yes, it works ...

Nope - perhaps you don't have any bad spyware to to remove. I've used that one for years, as have my friends in the IT business. I've also used Malwarebytes software - it's good to use two different programs to be sure.

DoubleClick is just a tracking cookie - it's low risk.

It is finding tracking cookies. Which are basically harmless. That's why they are the same all the time. You get them from websites you visit! SpyBot is an excellent program. When it really does what it is for, you will know it!
