The subscription on my norton security is about to run out but to renew my current product is going to cost £39.99. With money being tight I looked on ebay and can get norton internet security 2007 for a fraction of that price. My question is can I install this when I currently have norton 2008 and I have bought my daughter a refurbished laptop that needs security can I use if for it as well, or do I need to buy two items.

You can get these for free........ they're just as good, but don't hog your computer's memory like Norton has a reputation for doing:

Avira Anti-VIR Personal Edition

http://www.free-av.com

Spybot: Search & Destroy

http://www.safer-networking.org

ZoneAlarm Firewall (Free edition) or Comodo Firewall

http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/zonealarm_free_firewall.jsp

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Other (paid for) Internet Security suites, instead of Norton (which as I said, is a memory / resource hog) try either of these 2 which came top in the last WHICH? magazine test of these products I read:

http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-gb/zonealarm-computer-security-suite.htm

http://shop.ca.com/malware/internet_security_suite.aspx

ZoneAlarm costs £39.95, and you're allowed to install it on up to 3 PC's, while the Computer Associates (CA) costs the equivalent of £54, but allows you to install on up to 5 PCs

What I would do is uninstall Norton and do not renew the license. Norton is not that good and there are very good free programs. Here is a combination of a couple of anti virus programs and a couple of very good anti spyware programs.

To uninstall Norton you might need this

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&docid=2007082908475279&nsf=norton2008.nsf&view=docid&seg=hm&lg=nl&ct=nl

Because free programs are never completely as secure as the programs you are paying for I always recommend to install a combination of programs.

AVG free

http://free.avg.com/

or

Avast free

http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10019223.html

Then I would install as extra protection, Threatfire

Threatfire is an anti virus, that can be installed next to any other anti virus program on the same computer

There is a lot of mal ware you have to protect your pc against.

This is a very good program, that completely runs in the background

You need also a good firewall

Zone Alarm Firewall

Anti spyware
