New virus? won't let me load antivirus software. HELP!!?

I just got my friend onto the internet but she appears to have a virus on her computer (it may be something else but if it is a virus it's a good one!) I decided that I'd better get her some virus protection, searched AVG and Internet Explorer closed, searched antivirus software and it closed again, tried searching virus, anti* etc. but eveytime it closed, finally managed to get on the site by searching AGV download but guess what???

Sooo, I went on to my computer and downloaded the file to load AVG on to her computer, transferred it with a chip reader and tried to open the file, absolutely nothing happens whichever way I try (run, open from explorer, add/remove programs)

What I really need to know, is it a virus? if so how do I get rid of it, I have only tried loading AVG so maybe it is specific to that program are there any other good free antivirus software (or even a trial version but one that removes viruss and doesn't just search for them)

Any help would be appreciated.

If you have already done a virus scan I suggest doing a spyware scan.

Download and run this free program:

Good luck :-)

Well before you start wiping out your computer and starting new, you should run the current anti virus that is in there now and see if the culprit shows up. Be sure to update it first if you can so you have the most up to date definitions. Running in safe mode is highly suggested to protect your system if you are trying to remove the unknown. The computer will tell you where a bug is located if indeed there is one and it is as easy as clicking to remove it. Some bugs have to be removed manually. Sometimes the little buggers will hide in your start up program. Also most anti virus programs will not let you load another program until the other one is removed first. Saving it to a desk top and not opening it until the other is removed is the best thing to do. Remember to have a back up protection handy. AVG is a good anti virus, I use it and like it much better then Norton. Check the current settings to be sure a firewall is not blocking what you are trying to do as well. Hope this was helpful.

I have given this advice on a few occasions

via Yahoo! Answers so here goes.

Download Windows Live One Care. It's a 90 free trial it dose just about everything. It will run a very comprehensive scan of your system. But before it installs it will prompt you through certain stages of the process. Do as it asks. It is a Genuine Microsoft Product so you have no need to worry. One of the prompts I got was it needs to remove any protection you may have ie: AVG or whatever. You can uninstall it when the job is done and re install AVG again. It got my computer back to normal after a Virus / Trojan?!? some time ago. I am running XP Home SP2.

I think this will sort things out for you as it did for me.

Good Luck

You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore. Click the link on the left, follow the instructions.

To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Install AVG then run it in safe mode. You amy also then want to restart, get AVG anti spyware and run that in safe mode as well!

You need all these anti spyware programs;

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5 - AVG anti spyware

http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

Plus;

http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware

Try to run a TotalScan or a NanoScan from this web site http://www.infectedornot.com

The site is safe, it is owned by Panda Software as part of their new "Infected Or Not?"campaign.

There, they let you use their new tools (Panda Nano Scan and Panda Total Scan) for free as part of a new awareness campaign. Nobody has more virus definitions than them. Just go there and try the tools, you will check your computer for all kinds of malware.

I found a really neat place where you can download FREE Google Software. It has programs like Adobe, Virus Protection, Spyware and many more. It is legit…..it is through Google. Click on the link below and you will see it on the right side, toward the top. Really cool…no joke!

Virus are a pain in the back-Side. Win-Virus is one of them. The best advise I could gve would to try Windows liveone, it is the best Anti-Viruis around. and you get a three months free trial before u decide to buy.

I Bought it for £ 30.00 this covers 3 computers and is valid for one year. Have had absoultely no problems with my computer since installing it on my computer.

Yes! its true that all these free-virius anti-spyware will try and get your attention but these are virius themselves and they are very corrupt, however with Windows liveone they will never get on to your Computer.

Perhaps it's a virus. If you want to use avg free you should start windows in safe mode then scan the computer. Don't forget to update your avg (in www.grisoft.com) first.

Uninstall the anti-virus you have, and buy the latest McAfee anti-virus set. If you have Vista, norton's good. Buy em from PCWorld or the Official Mcafee or norton site

deploy a malware remover called Malwarebytes. seek on google for it, that's a unfastened, trusted application. in the journey that your computing device does not help you install malwarebytes, (virus) then deploy it on yet another computing device, then re-call malwarebytes something else e.g. My song. this could desire to artwork, after which you would be able to test your computing device for malware.
