Try IoBit Security 360 you can download it safely from the site below or from majorgeeks.com where you can find other programs.
Personally I would recommend using Advanced System Care from IoBit as that would be very easy to setup and use. All the child needs to do [it can be automated too] is press the big blue button.
Both software packages are free for indiviual use look for the free links on the site. The company is well respected.

In my opinion use
avg i really like this one
-or-
avast (i have used this one, but do not know enough to give it justice)
both come in free editions, but in order to find all of the viruses and completely remove any kind of virus, spyware, or malware, then i would suggest avg internet security or kaspersky internet security 2010

AVG is a good one I use it myself and they offer a free version. If your computer is infected and you need to clean it up use (spy bot search & destroy) it is a great product and it is free too, I love it.

no, anti-viruses will never actually find all viruses, malware, or spyware, the best thing you can do for their computer is reformat it every 6 months to 1 year

clam-av is free.
kaspersky is free for 30 days and is really simple to use.
