Step 1

Update your virus definitions. If the virus is relatively new, your existing virus definitions may not detect it. Variations of older viruses, designed to evade detection, are also more easily detected with updated definitions.

Step 2

Update your antivirus program. Before some viruses can be detected, an update to the antivirus program is required. Check the antivirus software for an automatic update feature or visit the program's website to find updates.

Step 3

Scan your computer for viruses. Doing a full scan can take a long time, so it's better to leave the computer and come back when it's finished. If you know which virus you have and which files it's infected, you can do a specialized scan of those files. That may remove that one virus, but you should then perform a full scan to detect others.

Step 4

Remove the virus. Your antivirus program should do this automatically or with little interaction from you. Some files may be repaired, meaning the virus has been removed without harming the file. However, others may have to be removed or "quarantined" in a special folder or archive where they can't do any harm.

Step 5

Repair the damage. Look at the list of infected files and try to restore any files you need. If they are executable files, reinstall the program that contained them. If they're document files, request new copies from the person who sent them to you. Scan and repair them before opening.

Mcafee is decent. You should try ESET. AVG anti-virus & spyware is also a good program. Try finding all in one security, which includes both spyware protection and virus protection. First, i would recommend you to reformat your computer. Its the most beneficial way. Otherwise you will end up having to get a new computer because, with a virus, your computer will eventually give u a blue screen and crash. Also you should get mcafee site advisor for your internet browser, it will tell you which links are safe and which are not. Forexample if the website is safe, it will have a green check next to the link. if it is unsafe , there would be a red x. Unkown is a grey ? mark. Only click the green ones.. never grey nor red links. sometimes you end up at a page that you do not know if its safe or not, on the bottom or top of the browser, the mcafee site advisor changes color which will allow you to determine which site is safe or not. Quarantine or delete any malicous software or what ever your virus protection detects as spyware or virus. Delete any songs with virus's/spyware. usually viruses have two extensions @ the end such as .tod.mp3 ..... many songs that are downloaded from p2p softwares such as limewire are full of viruses. there fore, i'd recommend you scan all the files you downloaded or transfered from other computers to detect viruses/spyware.

Step 1Visit your virus-scan software manufacturer's Web site and install any virus updates that are available. Then run the software. The software may not be able to delete the virus, but it may be able to identify it.

Step 2Search the Web for information regarding your specific virus by typing the name of the virus or its associated file into a search engine followed by the word "virus." For example, "Melissa virus," "BubbleBoy virus," etc.

Step 3Download and install any patches or other programs that will help you eliminate the virus. Or follow any instructions you find on deleting the virus manually.

Step 4Run another virus scan to make sure the virus has been dealt with properly

I am using Norton Internet Security which is to me one of the best. It does a great job stopping virus's and removing spyware but it is not free. You can try downloading one of the free anti-virus programs like McAfee and see if that would help.
