As a troublesooting procedure, it may be necessary to re-install the Automatic Client software on a WSUS client system (i.e. Windows XP systems).

There are 2 methods and one of them will surely succeed.

You can do this as follows:

Method 1:

Click Start - - Run.

In the run box type regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

Right click my computer - - Manage

then click on services and search for automati updates and then start the service.

Method 2

1. Go to the Windows Command prompt (CMD.EXE).

2. From the CMD.EXE prompt. run the following command:

For Windows XP SP2

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %systemroot%\inf\au.inf

For Windows XP RTM and SP1

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection AutoUpdate 132 %systemroot%\inf\au.inf

Running this command prompts you for the XP installation CD. Use Browse button and navigate to C:\Winnt\Servicepackfiles\I386 where wuapi.dll and other files related to Automatic Update Client can be found. Afterruning this command, you must restart your computer.

Once restarted, you can open the Services control panel applet and check to ensure the Automatic Update Service is installed.

If so it fails repeat the procedure but browse in your cd. E:/i386 folder for wuapi.dll. It will install without trouble. Guaranteed.

To add to JDC's answer, try the following to turn on the service by:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

2. Double-click the service that did not start.

3. Click the Log On tab.

4. Verify that the service has not been disabled for the hardware profile that you are using. If it has, click Enable.

5. Click the General tab. Verify that the service has not been disabled in the Startup Type box. If it has, click Automatic to have it start when you start the computer.

if you know how the service managed to get turned off, just undo whatever you did (start, right click computer, click manage, click services, right click automatic updates and click start)

if you have no idea how it got turned off, run a virus/spyware scan. there's some well written spyware and viruses that will do that

We lost stuff due to an 'automatic update' butting in to do it's job.

So we dont do it now
