I think that I've been infected with a virus on my laptop.....but I read somewhere that the virus can't do harm to your computer if you turn it off. But if I want to install the antivirus, wouldn't my computer get infected with the virus if I try to turn it on? Is there anyway that I can turn on my computer without it getting infected??? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!

You might have to install in safe mode, if already infected. You can try to install without being in safe mode.

You need to disable your system restore, and run your scans in safe mode. These infections will stay on your hard drive. When finished running scans re enable system restore.

These AV`s are all free and good. I prefer AVG, been using it for 3 years with no problem.

First, choose what new antivirus software you're going to install. If you're looking for something free, you can try Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, or Avast. Others here on Yahoo Answers may have more suggestions for you for free antivirus software. Locate and uninstall Norton before you install your new anti-virus, as multiple ant-viruses don't play well when running at the same time. Assuming you're using Windows 7, click Start>Control Panel and click "Uninstall a program" under Programs to uninstall Norton. Restart your computer if required. Then install your new antivirus software. Most antiviruses will prompt you to set up a scan schedule during or right after installation. This is a good idea if you're not one to remember to run antivirus scans on a regular basis. Don't forget to update the virus definitions after it's been installed. If you have any specific questions along the way, just ask a new question and don't forget to tell us what operating system you're using and what software you're using. Good luck!

When you do not start your car, it can break down. You have a car to be usee.

You can leave your laptop switched off till christmas 2009 and you will not get infected with a virus.

You do not want to do that. You like to use your laptop. so switch it on

and install these programs. YOur will then be well protected against viruses and spyware

Hi Mika,

it is true that virus cannot harm your computer if you switch it off.. but how many days can you do in the same way??

The best way is to first switch it on and then install the antivirus and then clean it... try to install the antivirus from safemode and then try to the laptop.. I hope this way will help you a lot...

What conditions or behavior indicate a virus?

Computers often get glitches that mimic malware symptoms, so maybe if you explain what up, corrective solutions can be suggested...
