Question:
MALWARE ALARM- do i have it or not?
2008-02-15 09:14:28 UTC
Yesterday my cuz was browsing a normally safe site when a safe link made a popup came up (although we hav blocked all popups).
It said 'Your computer may have a potential virus- download malware protection now'. She exited it, but it took her onto a website and began downloading itself. She exited internet explorer before it finished but i've heard this is a very clever virus so i doubt that closing it did anything.
The website is called scanner.malware-scan.exe. Our laptop seems fine tho. No humming, i can still save, but im using firefox instead of xplorer.. However access to my cookies is 'denied.'
I would like to know if this is real or a hoax. After seeing 1 guy's screenshots on his malware blog, my cuz says that happened to her. but i ran spyware doctor, and super-antispware... nothin. i heard this virus can lie dormant for weeks and THEN kick in.

anybody know any free malware destroyer programs?? heard spybot is good... what else. and also what can i expect from now?
and what

I think I have something for you.

DON'T GET NORTON.NORTON TRULY SUCKS,AND IT'S OVERRATED!IT SLOWS YOUR COMPUTER DOWN,AND IT ISN'T THAT GOOD!

Please try these:

SuperAntiSpyware:http://www.superantispyware.com/

Ad-Aware:http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware

AVG:http://www.grisoft.com/doc/31/us/crp/0

Ccleaner:http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

McAfee Site Advisor:http://www.siteadvisor.com/

I would also get the McAfee Site Advisor, because it warns users when downloading software or filling out forms on a web site that may make them victims of malware or spam.

These are good.Especially SuperAntiSpyware!

Guys please!

Dont recommand the guy your list of favorite software, even antivirus or trojans removals!

What he needs its help, not how to put more stuff on it!

He has already Norton 2008, so its fine!

Maybe there is free version (avast, AVG...) or other paying ones (kaspersky, bitdefender...) he does not need more.

Spyware doctor and super antispyware, never heard of them. i use Spybot search and destroy and I used to use Adaware se, but its not existing anymore (its adware 2007 and its crap).

You will seek help by yourself and google: trying find info from the malware's name. Sometimes there is correcting tools already made.

At first glance (not sure) have a look at the link into source:

it says you might have thieses folders:

Used folders:

* C:\Program Files\Intrigue Learning

* C:\Documents and Settings\User\Start Menu\Programs\PC PowerScan

if so yes you got it!

What I suggest now is...use hijackthis to persom a scan and produce a log of all running process in your pc and to post it on a specialised forum where experienced user like me will help you/ I know I said no more software to add but we need a log to know whats currently running on your pc:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php

and the forum:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/forums.php

its not a big deal anyway dont worry too much!!!

Bye!

EDIT:

not its not a hoax because its real: you saw it and it seemed to have downloaded something. Now a hoax would be just a fake story like if I was saying you, there is BADVIRUS.exe, and you get it by clicking too much on yahoo...thats a hoax!

But now, we dont know if you are infected or not... we can not know for sure actually...only you have access to pc!

Spybot search and destroy is good, you dont need to pay for your doctor stuff...

thats spybot:

http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

I used it, tried, installed on a few pc and its a recommanded one. As was Ad-aware SE but its dead now, again the new version is less good.

What else? honestly...you dont need to put too much...

maybe a antivirus, and a spyware/keylogger removal is fine.

Regularly updating them, using hijackthis once upon a time when you have doubt, its fine.

Then it seems you dont click wherever or opened weird attachement so dont worry too much!!!

I suggest you install a dedicated anti-spyware program as well as having your antivirus software.

Microsoft have a free to download program, Windows Defender:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

I suggest you download and install it.

From what you say, I think you probably avoided it installing anything, especially as two other anti-spyware tools drew a blank. Try rebooting into safe-mode (F8 when starting up) and scanning then, just in case any malicious software is hiding itself.

In future I suggest you make sure that anyone using your PC only uses Firefox (make sure you are up to date - 2.0.0.12 at the time of writing). It's not a guarantee that you won't get some soft of spyware or virus, but from my experience it is a lot more secure.

These will work. I've been using them for a few years now on my own computers.

As a software developer and tester, I've had to try them all.

They are all compatible with each other and Windows XP and Vista.

You will never have to buy software again.

Try AVG Free, do a scan with that, then download another great program called SuperAntiSpyware, which will search deep into your computer for those nasty viruses and spyware, and to top it off, do a scan with spybot search and destroy.

It is a virus type thing. Try running a virus scan, which if you don;t have then get Avast home, it is great and FREE. then download Lavasoft's AdAware SE. that should remedy the situation. Good luck
