Spam is an email message which comes from a person or company you haven't given access to your email service, and which tried to sell something to you, or force unwanted opinions onto you.

Basically unwanted emails sent to lots of people advertising something, or trying to defraud people.

Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately send unsolicited bulk messages. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: instant messaging spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, Web search engine spam, spam in blogs, wiki spam, mobile phone messaging spam, internet forum spam and junk fax transmissions.

spamming is economically viable because advertisers have no operating costs beyond the management of their mailing lists, and it is difficult to hold senders accountable for their mass mailings. Because the barrier to entry is so low, spammers are numerous, and the volume of unsolicited mail has become very high. The costs, such as lost productivity and fraud, are borne by the public and by Internet service providers, which have been forced to add extra capacity to cope with the deluge. Spamming is widely reviled, and has been the subject of legislation in many jurisdictions.

The people that create electronic spam are called spammers

Spam is the IT equivalent of unwanted junk mail. The way to get rid of it is to prevent it from reaching you in the first place by using a good spam filter on your email inbox. Yahoo provide one for free as do most email servers. Prevention is better than cure.

It's what all the others have described, but it's called Spam, apparently, in tribute to the Monty Python sketch (which featured a cafe menu in which Spam was the main constituent of every meal.)

There are a lot of Spam blockers and Spam washers available, both free and commercial - but if anybody ever finds a way to really get rid of it they have the potential to be rich enough to buy Bill Gates!

spam generated by programmes - one thing. They automatically changed senders address so it will be possible to reach your e-mail box. Yahoo spam protection is OK but the best way to keep out of the spam is to open a separate account for your personal use and NEVER enclose it to any one that can pass it to the third party. i have 3 accounts. One is totally spammed when my personal one is clean and easy to manage

When you use your computer e-mailing,your addy can be fished and found out. Then it is sold by the collectors to third parties.Suppliers of all sorts then send you messages ,that end up in your spam box.Basically everyone who sends you an e-mail,if they are not in your contact list, their message will go to your spam box.In 2 words spam is unsollicited e-mails.

Exactly like everyone said above, it's junk mail.

Also, when someone online, in email, IM, or a game, etc., repeats the same line over and over, that's called spamming.
