No you will still be in danger, port forwarding allows your computer to be open to the internet instead of just your router. Various software which is dedicated to hacking uses random ip addresses to find targets so even if you only tell your friend your ip address, you are still in danger. However, with proper security measures such as firewalls and security policies, the risks can be reduced.

It depends. Port forwarding is a way of directing incoming connections to where it needs to go. For example, imagine a router like a ship yard. Each docking station is one of the devices connected to the router. When a ship (connection) arrives, the router holds information that will direct that connection or 'ship' to it's correct docking station (device). This can be dangerous if you are running services behind those ports. ANY service you run should remain up-to-date at all times.

The TCP/IP and UDP protocols are two standards that are often used by devices. TCP/IP is like building a bridge out of wood to carry information across, thus making it a 'connection-required' standard. Whereas, UDP is a connection-less standard. Think of UDP like throwing the information across the gap to your friend. It can sometimes be unreliable.

Not matter what you do online, their's always something out their even more worse, so I wouldn't worry, I've owned many different types of servers, and opened many ports, and had zero problems. I presume your going to make it a server for friends, so in that case your level of danger is very low.

For an extra precaution you could mask your IP address and use a free domain, so when you give out a link, it will be an url of your choice.

You're fairly safe.

You'll forward a specific port to a specific host (your server) which will listen on that port.

You will be allowing inbound traffic direct to that machine on that port. Ensure it's protected with security software.
