It is not a virus. I have had these kind of messages before and it turned out to be a newly installed program that was not compatible with my XP operating system. It may not be easy to find which one but perhaps if you think about it you might get an idea.

You could try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:

start

programs

accessories

systems tools

system restore

This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.

In my opinion it sounds as bad sector on hardrive rather than malware or automatic update related problem. If that’s the case, chances are there isn’t anything which could be easily done (possible nothing at all) to fix this problem. If willing to risk $87 investment I would recommend giving try to SpinRite:

http://www.grc.com

PS.

Trying repair Windows as advised in previous answers could work as well (still probably it would have better chances of success AFTER running SpinRite).

Giving shot to system Restore before investing could be worth a trial too.

AFTER POST - CORRECTION:

I was wrong - it actually could be related to updates:

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html

The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at

http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

The problem is with the automatic window update. to fix follow these steps:

1.Go 2 the start menu

2.Right click "my computer"

3.Click "properties" then the "automatic updates" tab

4.Choose "turn off automatic updates"

5.Reboot your computer

6.Go back to start menu and in all programs go to "windows update" you have to be connected to the internet.

7.Manually update windows.

8.Turn your automatic updates back on.

if this doesn't help there is another way you can fix this but it is more complicated. Here it is:

Perform these steps leaving the svchost crash dialog open.

1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.

2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".

3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.

4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.

5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic". Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the service.

6. Repeat the above steps with the other service: Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

Next, Re-register Windows Update components and Clear the corrupted Windows Update temp folder

1. Click on Start and then click Run,

2. In the open field type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.

3. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message, click OK.

4. Please repeat these steps for each of the following commands:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL

REGSVR32 ATL.DLL

REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL

REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL

REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL

REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

After the above steps are finished. Sicne temporary folder of Windows Update may be corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder that

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

net stop WuAuServ

(note, you might need to reboot before the net stop command will work)

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.

4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window. net start WuAuServ

if this doesn't help you might have to reinstall windows. hope this helps.

Turn off automatic updates, reboot, then manually going to windows updates and installing the updates, turing on automatic updates, reboot.

It seems that code has to do with some sort of Pentium program error detection. Please try and I hope this helps you out.

It looks like that your system has caught virus.

Try to remove the virus from the site:

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2003-081819-3333-99

Or look for tools to remove W32.Welchia.Worm.
