......so how do I get rid of it? On my Yahoo mail page, get the following popup at the bottom of the screen every five minutes. Same format as when I'm asked if I want to open regular files.

Do you want to open or save get-user-id.js from ad.yieldmanager.com?

How do I get this to stop? I've run my virus software with no luck.

"js" is JavaScript", and "ad.yieldmanager" are advertising items from Yahoo.

If you don't use it already, Get Firefox as your default browser & use it for all tasks.

The following mods help, but methods ("vectors") are dynamic, and users must be aware of emerging threats.

FIREFOX: Tools> Options> Privacy> top drop slot set to "Firefox will use custom settings..."> Check 'Accept Cookies from sites' &

►Un-Check 'Accept 3rd Party cookies'.

A good collection of effective security & privacy add-on's (Official Mozilla) is here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/collections/dunbar-pappy/dunbarpappy/

►"AdBlock Plus" ( ►►AdBlock must now be modified: http://www.ghacks.net/2013/07/31/how-to-configure-adblock-plus-malware-social-media-button-and-tracking-blocking/ )

► At minimum, get the #1 item for malware prevention: "NoScript", which constrains automagically fetching & deployment of potentially tainted assets, and offsets the Microsoft forced install if it's rubbish. ►Firefox (v23) has turned on JavaScript by default, with no easily available UI to modify that, so it's even more important to get, and use "NoScript".

Bookmark and refer to this page for how it works, and how to use it when sites don't function and you need to "loosen" script permissions : http://noscript.net/features#contentblocking

INTERNET EXPLORER does not handle 3rd party assets very well no matter what settings you have (or anything else) and won't give nearly the control as Firefox or Chrome **.

It is junk. Use at your own risk.

In your web browser, try to configure it, so it blocks pop-up windows.

Since you never mentioned which web browser you are using, you can search on google if you don't know how to configure your web browser to block pop-up windows.

Spam (electronic)

Spamming is the use of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages (spam), especially advertising, indiscriminately. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: instant messaging spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, Web search engine spam, spam in blogs, wiki spam, online classified ads spam, mobile phone messaging spam, Internet forum spam, junk fax transmissions, social networking spam, social spam, television advertising and file sharing spam. It is named for Spam, a luncheon meat, by way of a Monty Python sketch in which Spam is included in almost every dish.

Spamming remains economically viable because advertisers have no operating costs beyond the management of their mailing lists, and it is difficult to hold senders accountable for their mass mailings. Because the barrier to entry is so low, spammers are numerous, and the volume of unsolicited mail has become very high. In the year 2011, the estimated figure for spam messages is around seven trillion. The costs, such as lost productivity and fraud, are borne by the public and by Internet service providers, which have been forced to add extra capacity to cope with the deluge. Spamming has been the subject of legislation in many jurisdictions.[1]

A person who creates electronic spam is called a spammer.
