Try rebooting Windows but go into SAFE MODE instead (press F8 while your computer restarts).

Then try to delete it in safe mode and see if that works.

I would say a virus was on that pendrive and now has run on your computer and so while it's in memory, you can not delete it.

Try scanning your computer with Malwarebytes. What I've found is while antivirus software is good for viruses, it's not that great with spyware/malware.

Malwarebytes - https://store.malwarebytes.org/342/cookie?affiliate=9230&redirectto=http%3a%2f%2fwww.malwarebytes.org%2f&product=29945 - is the best anti-spyware/malware scanner/remover I know of. Download Malwarebytes FREE (as you only need it to scan and clean otherwise the PRO version has real time scan but it's a PAID version). You can download the free version here: https://store.malwarebytes.org/342/cookie?affiliate=9230&redirectto=http%3a%2f%2fwww.malwarebytes.org%2f&product=29945 . I have used Malwarebytes at various client sites in the past and it has always been good a picking up nasties and removing them that antivirus software such as Symantec, Trend and NOD32 was unable to do.

Here what I would recommend you should do:

1. Download Malwarebytes from here: https://store.malwarebytes.org/342/cookie?affiliate=9230&redirectto=http%3a%2f%2fwww.malwarebytes.org%2f&product=29945

2. Restart your computer. When your computer starts up, after the BIOS/logo screen, press [F8] and choose "SAFE MODE with Networking" (*very important!*). Install Malwarebytes on your computer. Now update Malwarebytes.

3. Open Malwarebytes and do a **FULL SCAN** (very important to do FULL SCAN) from Malwarebytes and wait for it to finish. This will take some time to complete so be patient.

4. Remove/delete all the nasties it has found then reboot your computer again in *SAFE MODE*.

5. Run a [FULL SCAN] again from Malwarebytes in case there are more nasties that didn't show up the first time as generally deleting the first lot of nasties, it 'unhides' more nasties.

Let me know how you get on and whether this has fixed it

(Remember: The FREE version is great for scanning and removing spyware/malware. However the FREE version of Malwarebytes will *NOT* do real time scanning or real time protection. So if you want to protect yourself going forward, you may want to consider getting the PRO version instead)

The autorun.inf is probably on your main computer as well. If you have been transferring files between it and your pen drive it will be.

Ok

Two programs here

Trojan remover is free to get and use for 30 days, then a bought license is needed. 30 days is more than you need right now.

Trojan Remover will find any Trojans and Malware on your computer and pen drive, quarantine and delete them. It is here

http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/download.html

Diskwipe completely erases the Hard drive or flash/pen drive. So you don't use it to remove autorun.inf from any drive that has data on it that you want. If your pen drive is free of stuff you want use Diskwipe to totally wipe it. Formatting doesn't completey erase data from Hard drives or USB/pen drives. Diskwipe is for super security for people that are worried that someone might get into their old Hard drive they have thrown out or returned to a shop as it was faulty, and recover personal details, like Bank accounts/Pin numbers, sensitive etc

http://www.diskwipe.org/

Instal both programs but do not use DiskWipe on a drive with data on it you want and do not use it to remove autorun.inf from a drive with data on it you want.

It is for totally wiping out of ALL Data on a hard / pen drive.

Use Trojan Remover first, with the pen drive plugged into the computers USB port. Do a FULL Scan

You can do a selective scan and pick whichever drive you want to scan. Do a Full Scan of your system

A final question: is this autorun.inf you mention a problem??

Autorun.inf is part of the Windows system. There is an autorun.inf that is a virus and it usually causes problems with hard drives not opening files properly.

Run Trojan Remover and if its a virus it will be renamed to autorun.inf.vir.

Its harmless then.

Remember what I said about DiskWipe !!!!!

Also, when you have done the above, go to System Restore and Create a Restore Point. Name it to whatever you like so you know that it is After the autorun.inf and whatever virus removal/fix has been done.

System restore is a Great hiding place for virus etc to have its little respawn ability tucked away for when you restore back to that point. Which will be before you created the New Restore point.

Autorun.inf, the worm/virus version is usually a "Hidden Process" and you usually cannot see it.Until its discovered and revealed by a good Trojan finder.

Trojan Remover will do that.

That is why I asked about you knowing it is on your pan drive. Got me...

Ok.

Get the TRemover and update it then run it.

Good luck

I had the autorun.inf virus on my computer 18 months ago and I used Trojan Remover to get rid of it.

I had picked up the virus from an internet cafe I used to get a few files from sites. It also had another Hidden process as well, something to do with it was a virus/program for stealing internet game IDs and licenses.

I don't play internet games. But the cafe was mainly an Internet gaming centre.

Scan all ya mates and your pen drives as soon as they are plugged into your computer. Before you use Them.

MalwareBytes is a good one for that. Its already mentioned to you by others. Get that too. Use it daily

Issue

The autorun.inf file is a worm which spreads all over your partitions by creating a copy of itself and comes usually comes from USB flash drives . It won't let you access your drives by giving you an autorun menu when double clicking on your c: or your usb flash drive.

Solution

This is the standard procedure to delete the Autorun.inf file

Normally when a virus infects a windows system which causes a drive opening problem, it automatically creates a file named autorun.inf in the root directory of each drive.

This autorun.inf file is a read only ,hidden and a system file and the folder option is also disabled by the virus. This is deliberately done by the virus in order to protect itself. autorun.inf initiates all the activities that the virus performs when you try to open any drive.

You have to just delete this file and restart your system to correct this problem.

Follow the set of commands below to show and delete the autorun.inf

1. Go to Start then Run and type cmd and press enter. This will open a command prompt window. On this command prompt window type the following steps.

2. type

cd\

press enter

3. type

attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf

press enter

please note the spacing: no space between the dash and the letter & a space after the r h and s

4. type del autorun.inf press enter

if the PC returns a "file not found" message - check the spelling for autorun.inf

5. if you have a d drive: type d: and press enter for d: drive partition. Now repeat steps 3 and 4. Similarly repeat step 5 for all your hard disk partition.

Restart your system and your trouble will be fixed. Except the program that caused the problem is still in your computer.

Make sure you are connected to the Internet. and download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program.

Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.

When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:

Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click Finish. MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program

before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.

Press the OK button to close that box and continue.

On the Scanner tab:

Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button.

The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected

and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the

top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message

box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".

Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process. Back at the main Scanner

screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found. Make sure

that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report

will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below) The log

is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.

Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.

If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

There is a malware program on your computer putting that "autorun.inf" file on your pendrive.

You will have to use an anti-malware program to remove that malware program before you can permanently get rid of that autorun.inf file.

Meanwhile, get a Ubuntu Linux Live CD. Boot with that CD and then plug in the pen drive. You can use Linux to delete the autorun.inf file because Linux does not use it at all, and when you boot with the Live CD, any malware on your computer cannot start because Windows is not running.

the terrific factor could be to backup your considerable records on it and format your flash force. that's executed on your pc. basically plug it in, proper click and format. yet in case any of your records document has a pandemic copying it back interior the flash would convey the virus back in. subsequently that's cautioned to have an antivirus on the pc so there will be no threats of viruses. yet another determination is to take the flash to somebody who has an as much as date antivirus and test and get rid of each and all of the viruses. desire i helped..........
