Your preference for free software is probably what got you infected to begin with.



The problem with downloading security software when your computer is already infected - or downloading any software for that matter - is that many viruses will know to direct you away from websites hosting known security software like Avast or MWB. You'll end up at a site that suggests that it's a real site - may even look like the real thing - but isn;t. Downloading from there will only get you...more trouble.



You really shouldn't be cheap when it comes to your computer's security.



Many people on YA say that they're desperate for something, but insist that the answer be for something free.

AVG is free and works very well. I would also suggest making sure you have a good spyware and malware remover. Microsoft makes a nice malicious removal tool, there is malwarebytes and crap cleaner.
