I always heard you didn't really need an antivirus/antispyware with a Mac, but I just want to be on the safe side.

I know there are tons of good ones for PC, but are there any ones that are comparable to those for MAC?

Anti-virus/spyware/malware is pretty much a windows requirement. Viruses and spyware are rarely, if ever, found on a Mac or Linux based desktop and not just because windows is more popular, the windows OS architecture has numerous fundamental security flaws from the door.

ClamAV, mentioned already, is the only free Mac AV software that I am aware of.

As far as I know, they're compatible with both, as I've seen no warnings to suggest otherwise. Try Malwarebytes for anti-malware, CCleaner for browser cleaning, & Antivira for anti-virus.

It's good that you want to be safe, there is an increasing amount of attacks on Macs.

Although you don't need any and in 8 years of being a Mac user I have never encountered any OS X viruses

you can use clamxav if you want to.
