Can you check for the exact error (it will be at the end of the log here: C:\Windows\Windows Update.log) you may have to unhide files and folders to see it.

Check your date and time is correct. (bottom right corner of taskbar)

Start/Run

Type: services.msc

check that none of the following services are disabled:

Automatic Updates

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

Cryptographic Services

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

System Restore Service

IN REPLY TO ADDED DETAIL: there should be a log file on your computer (detailed above) which relates to windows update, it will log any errors that it has trying to download.

Do you have a security suite (norton, mcafee etc) you may have to disable it while downloading updates (make sure your windows firewall in control panel is enabled if you do this)

if that doesnt work:

download dial-a-fix:

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Dial-a-fix-Download-27328.html

choose the option to fix windows update and press go.

Yeah, it grew to become into SP3. that is user-friendly to create matters on some rigs althou maximum dont have probs putting it in. might have been updating itself after putting the SP3 in inflicting the rig to run sluggish and it could have in all probability have been given back to widespread speed had your dad merely given it a while to reconfigure itself. might of even been waiting to get onto the internet if the rig grew to become into updating the Lan drivers. do not relatively want SP3 besides the shown fact that it does have some superb good factors.

1 control panel

2 security centre

3 click automatic updates

4 check box, notify me, do not automatically install them
