I just had this problem today and its fixed here is what you have to do.

Download HighJack this from the following link

http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html

Then click install Highjack this

Click scan

Then check all of the following files with the check mark...After you have checked off all of these files hit FIX your problems should be solved. Mine were...a lot simpler than I thought it would be.

I too downloaded winrar and picked it up.

I believe that I have got rid of this pest but I can't be sure.

None of my antivirus checkers seemed to find it so I deleted the host file in win32. Then I did a registry clean up and deleted all files by unknown authors. This seemed to work. The pop up went and internet access is as normal even after rebooting my laptop.

I then downloaded malawarebytes which I had never used before until reading advice in this forum,. I scanned and it found two trojan files which I promptly deleted.

How to remove Fake Software, Spyware, Trojans and Viruses:

Download, install, update and scan your computer with both SuperantiSpyware and Malwarebytes, delete what ever they find, if this fails to completely remove the virus/spyware download then update Avast and run a boot scan (click schedule boot-time scan and restart your PC), all the software below is free and safe to use.

SuperantiSpyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/

Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Avast Anti-Virus: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

To protect your PC in the future you need to use anti-virus software and a firewall, id recommend using Avast and Comodo Pro firewall both are very effective and completely free, you should also switch to Firefox 3 if you are browsing with IE as its much safer. (links on my profile)

This appears to be a recent but fairly unsophisticated virus. It hijacks your browser by editing your hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) and aliasing a lot of popular websites back to its own phishing site. I have just blocked it by opening the hosts file, deleting the contents, saving and then making the file read only. Doing this allows the browser to work again but the pop-up still appears, although this time it fails and throws an error. Am just checking through my registry and processes to try and find out what causes the pop-up. Will post details when I find the root cause.

OK, the program causing the problem is explore.exe, you can find it in the system32 directory. As long as you have deleted the offending download, you should be able to just delete explore.exe. Once your system is clean, remember to enter alias 127.0.0.1 back to localhost in your hosts file
