Question:
Is TOR safe to use on a computer?
2013-05-13 00:21:20 UTC
I used TOR before, I'm just wondering if TOR is safe to use? Will people who also use TOR see information about my computer etc? (five stars for the best, detailed answer)

Tor is alot safer than most proxies are or other VPN's and its a very good tool for amonymity with that being said Tor isn't perfect there are instances where when using Tor that people could see what your doing beacuse of the exit nodes that Tor leaves behind however it's not something to worry about because Tor has multiple Layers of encryption and it's pretty safe to use. It would be very hard for somebody to know who you are, where your at, or what your doing while using Tor. And no people who are on the Tor network will not see information about your computer.

these answers below offer an oversimplified and ofter wrong. look at a couple of analogies. if someone is watching over your shoulder while you use TOR, the data, etc. is clearly not safe. But it is not TOR's fault. i have no idea what our friend Luke is experiencing. he lost admin rights (nothing to do with Tor) and then presumably somebody hacked through the browser running on TOR (?) and now hacks(?) his web cam? is he saying his gf caught him? again completely unrelated to TOR.

--simply put Zach is correct. Tor is relatively anonymous, the issue with exit nodes is if they are controlled by LE or otherdeep pocket adversaries, in normal config - the exit knoks know neither the destination nor the source. but you get different exit nodes at random (of of 4-5000) so the risk is small unless you are Bin Laden. there are serious security issues with TOR and IRC if other vpns are involved. TOR is a very valuable and legal tool that can be used in conjunction with other tools to provide additional protection against political persecution or other real or perceived dangers.

Looks like you have a Yahoo account, so here is a WARNING if your going to use Tor NEVER log in to any of your web accounts

Check out Tails comes with several built-in applications pre-configured with security in mind: web browser, instant messaging client, email client, office suite, image and sound editor, etc.

use the Internet anonymously almost anywhere you go and on any computer:

all connections to the Internet are forced to go through the Tor network;

leave no trace on the computer you're using unless you ask it explicitly;

use state-of-the-art cryptographic tools to encrypt your files, email and instant messaging.

It is a complete operating-system designed to be used from a DVD or a USB stick independently of the computer's original operating system. It is Free Software and based on Debian GNU/Linux.

When you reach a website on the internet through Tor, you are trusting your data with whoever it went through, just like if you allowed them to exit through your line they are trusting you. Some people just want to promote freedom, others are trying to steal your credentials.

Since you can't trust strangers, you should encrypt anything you send through, either via https or other means.

Dave Johnson and Roland Roberts asked the same question. You should see the answers side by side.
