I want to try a new host but when I went to setup the site, firefox told me their certificate for the secure connection could not be verified. The certificate had expired 4 months ago. When I asked their support they told me that they sign their own certificates. I am concerned and don't know weither I'm being picky or just ignorant but it seems like a scam. Why should I trust their word? Can someone explain to me if I should or should not expect these things to be in order.

I can't think of a single reason why you should trust their word. In fact, I'd notch my overall confidence in them downward on the basis of this alone.

Maybe I don't understand certificates (very possible), but self-certification sounds like a sham. The others cost money for a reason.

Sorry.

As with so many things on the Internet, it is a matter of trust.

Certificates are expensive to buy and maintain.

Self signed ones are the party saying they are trustworthy their own self, and use an accepted (perhaps) method of encryption, but anyone can incorporate this...it has no reflection on the sites honesty.

If your own site will be requiring monetary transactions from visitors, then my inclination would be to look for another host. How can you expect potential customers to trust them if you can't decide yourself?

All this gets back to a matter of trust.

The above WoT suggestion is reasonable if you have no other way of knowing.

I found a very useful and free Web safety tool called McAfee SiteAdvisor. It adds safety ratings to search results and the sites you visit to help protect you from spyware, adware, spam, and identity theft. I thought you might also want to try McAfee SiteAdvisor so you can stay safer online.

To try McAfee SiteAdvisor, just go to their website and click "download." It's free and only takes about 30 seconds.

Another test site is Norton Web Safe by Symantec.

Test the site. If its clean, trust the cert.
