Don't use the TOR bundle that runs off firefox 17.... it's being exploited, but if you use latest version, should be fine....check the TOR website for news releases.

The tor bundle should launch fine under Linux. Using Wine seems to be more trouble than it is worth. Are you having problems running it natively? If so what are the problems?

As noted by another poster, the US government has been exploiting a flaw in Tors old version of Firefox. This flaw was only for Winblows machines. This problem has been corrected.

It is better to not use your every day OS wile on Tor. If you are the paranoid type (not a bad thing) it would be better to boot into a usb with either Liberte Linux or TAILS.
