Question:
How do I get rid of a virus?
2007-11-19 09:48:37 UTC
Somebody please, please, please help me out. I am at work and on a website I accidentally clicked on something that gave me a "trojan virus." I scanned my computer and everything, and updated it, but it did not clean the file. I think that may mean that it already did it's damage. How can i completely get rid of this so it's no longer on my work computer, and so it won't spread! I am going to get in trouble with my boss and i feel sick to my stomach now!!!

This is not a problem at all. Here's what you need to do.

1st, don't waste your time with AVG, true sword, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, superantispyware, avast, panda, kaspersky, spyware blaster, bitdefender, spyware guard, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.

2nd, You need some of the best software out there. Norton Systemworks is very good. That's the only good software from Norton. I wouldn't recommend Norton Internet security, its not that great. Now the best software you should get is Webroot AntiVirus With AntiSpyware & Firewall, formally known as Webroot's Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. This is Elite software. It blocks over 510,000 definition threats, which contain multiple fringerprints with each(you can do the math). No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything: viruses, spyware, adware, malware, root kits, keyloggers, trojans, worms, and anything else. It also has active shields and a Firewall which learns from your useage. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.

3rd, after you install and update the software, since its in your system you will have to turn off system restore and then go into safe mode and run the scan and eliminate the virus. then after removal, reboot and turn system restore back on.

4th, (Optional) Now if you for some reason don't go for Webroot's software. I recommend a Firewall from Zone Alarm, their free version is so good. Or you can buy their Pro version, but the free version will do more than the job.

5th, any probs during or after you do all this, send me an e-mail or IM. I guarenDAMNtee my answers and will help you in person from IM if needed.

whoa whoa whoa. calm down. well to begin with, trojan isnt a virus at all it doesnt spread but it does make a back door for hackers to come in easier but the way to get rid of it is Install McAfee or Norton Anti Virus programs and run daily. Install Spybot and run daily.

If you can or have not been able to get rid of this with a good av, do an online scan with either Norton of McAfee. They will tell you what it is and how to get rid of it.

If you visit Kazaa or other p2p sites, you will have this problem continuously until

you install enough protection to keep it out. That is the primary source for trojans.

If Norton can't find it, try The Cleaner from www.moosoft.com. It's free to try. Good Luck.

Listen to me! Calm down! I do not know if you are able to download software to your computer, but if you have full rights on your pc, I would go to www.download.com and download Spyware Doctor Starter Edition totally free and best malware remover on the market. This should remove the trojan, which in this case seems much more like spyware than a true virus. It is more than likely nothing to be overly concerned about. However, as a last precaution go to Trend Micro Housecall and do a free online scan and this will remove the rest of the malware from your machine. Problem solved!

Don't forget to uninstall Spyware Doctor when your finished!

It's not rebooting. You are reformatting. Yes that gets rid of them, but that gets rather annoying. Just get Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast! Home Edition. They will protect you from most viruses, but no program on earth will stop everything.

Relax man. A trojan virus won't bring down the world! Just tell the boss what's happenend and get the IT department to clean it. Chill.

Better to bite the bullet and let your IT department know before it hits the network and infects everything on the network. If the whole network gets infected you're liable to get fired because you didn't tell anyone. If you tell you're more likely to just get reprimanded.

Type in Ad-Aware in Google and download that then run the full system scan

Otherwise type in Spybot search and destroy and do the same procedure

Hope that helps

try this website http://www.spywareinsider.com/removal.html

get hold of hijack this and a hijack this reader. Get rid of what it says to delete. Also visit trend micro housecall. Run your companies Antivirus as well, if you dont have one then just tell your boss you opened an email and you got the virus, and that the company needs to invest in a good enterprise antivirus solution like Trendmicro SMB

find the exact file name of the trojan...it should have a period somewhere in the name, then go to google and do a search for how to remove that file...most likely there will be lots of results on how do remove it..

An example of a google search would be "How to remove trojanhorse.w32"

Yes, have the quotation marks in the search.

PCTools products do get good reviews. The good thing is they have free versions of their products. They work great. Spyware Doctor from the Google pack is a must. I highly recommend it. I bought Webroots Spysweeper and spyware doctor finds stuff spysweeper does not. Having both is a perfect combo and I recommend running two anti-spyware products.

Anti-Spyware for a cost.

Personally I bought Webroot's Spysweeper, their product is great and well worth the money. Watch Best Buy ads because sometimes it goes on sale for $10 to $15.

The FIRST thing to do is DISABLE System Restore.

If enabled, this allows malware to hide in the computer and re-install itself. To disable it, RIGHT-click on "My Computer." Select "Properties" then under the 'System Restore' tab, check 'Turn off system restore' IF not already checked.

The next most helpful things that would help you are to use ONLINE scanners from websites to remove any malware on your PC. The current best online scanners I prefer are from Kaspersky antivirus and Bitdefender antivirus. Together, these 2 scanners will find ALL the bad stuff on your PC because they have the BEST detection rate.

First, use Kaspersky's. (FYI: ALL these scans require you to agree to a EULA and install an activex control which is needed to perform the scan, so agree to them all.)

*NOTE: Some scanners ONLY work with IE or may not fully remove malware

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner......

Then scan with:

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html...

There are MANY other good online scanners which you may choose to also use (which will take longer but ensure safety):

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/defau... (Windows Live Onecare)

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/ax/.... (A-squared scanner)

http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/...... (ewido)

http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor/pes... (Spyware scan)

http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor/vir... (Virus scan)

http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/s... (Panda Antivirus)

http://www.housecall.trendmicro.com/...... (TrendMicro)

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/...... (Nod32)

http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols... (F-secure)

After using these, it's ESSENTIAL to install at least 3 antispywares. Do NOT use more than 1 antiVIRUS or firewall as they conflict.

The best things in life are FREE, and great free software can be found @:

Superantispyware.com (Superantispyware FREE)

lavasoft.com (Ad-aware SE)

emsisoft.com (A-squared FREE)

safer-networking.org (Spybot S&D)

javacoolsoftware.com (SpywareBlaster)

microsoft.com (Windows Defender)

free-av.com (Avira AV)

siteadvisor.com (Tells you how safe websites are)

phoenixlabs.org (Blocks malware, government, anti-p2p org's)

zonealarm.com (Top Notch Firewall)

comodo.com (Another Top Notch firewall)

iobit.com (Advanced Windows Care)

Eusing.com (Registry cleaner)

ccleaner.com (Junk file cleaner)

Now if you can afford it, the best software to BUY are:

Spy Sweeper (VERY much worth the $$$)

Security Task Manager

Norton Internet Security

Kaspersky (BEST! =D )

Bitdefender (2nd BEst!)

F-secure (Same as Kaspersky)

Linkscanner (Blocks exploits in real time)

Advanced Uninstaller

If there's ever ONE file you suspect is infected, you can try some single file scanners which use MULTIPLE engines to scan ONE file.

They are @ virusscan.jotti.org or virustotal.com

If you're PC is squeaky clean, re-enable system restore because it IS good to have but we needed to shut it off to wipe out the malware.

Just RIGHT-click on "My Computer." Select "Properties" then under the 'System Restore' tab, UN-check "Turn off system restore."

*Another thing to consider is using another browser besides Internet Explorer. It has a lot of security holes,

making it less safe. I prefer Firefox from mozilla.org.

It's easy to use, FAST, and has a lot of neat little add-ons you can toy around with. It is also safer from exploits than IE.*
